Jovan Dewitt will take over as defensive coordinator for the Panthers in 2011 as he enters his third season at UNI.
In 2010, Dewitt's three starting linebackers earned recognition
on the all-Missouri Valley Football Conference team. Jamar Thompson
earned first-team status, L.J. Fort notched second-team all-MVFC and
James Conley was named to the honorable mention squad. UNI's defense
ranked No. 1 in the MVFC in rushing defense (104.42 yards/game), sacks
(3.08/game) and tackles-for-loss (6.92/game).
Dewitt directed the UNI linebackers in 2009 and 2010, including
two-time first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honoree Josh
Mahoney and honorable mention All-MVFC selection Jamar Thompson. The
2009 Panther 'D' ranked fourth in the nation among all FCS schools in
scoring defense, allowing just 13.2 points per game. UNI also led the
MVFC in rushing defense, passing defense and total defense.
Dewitt, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., earned his bachelor of science
degree in physics/mathematics at Northern Michigan University in 1999,
following a stellar career on the gridiron. He was an All-American
linebacker for the Wildcats in 1995 and 1996. Dewitt was named the
conference's defensive player of the year as a senior in 1996.
At the conclusion his senior season he was invited to an NFL workout
by the New Orleans Saints and played in the Arena Football League for
the Iowa Barnstormers, Orlando Predators and Fargo Freeze.
He began his coaching career as a student assistant at NMU in 1997,
and following his playing career joined the NMU staff as a graduate
assistant in 2000 and 2001. He also served as NMU's academic coordinator
during his two-year stint as a graduate assistant.
Dewitt gained his first full-time coaching job as the running backs
coach at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College in 2002. He moved on to
Fairmont (W. Va.) State University where he served as the team's special
teams coordinator in 2003. Dewitt returned to his alma mater in 2004
where he served as the NMU defensive coordinator for two seasons.
Dewitt then spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator at St.
Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., from 2006-2008. Under his supervision,
the St. Norbert defense posted three shutouts and finished second in
the Midwest Conference in total defense in 2007. Dewitt also served as a
lecturer in the physical education department.
Jovan and his wife, Lisa, have a daughter, Maya, and a son, Jovan Jr.
