College Sports Journal has honored three University of Northern Iowa football players with its postseason awards, with seniors Ben Boothby and L.J. Fort being named All-Americans and David Johnson being named to the All-Freshman Team.
Boothby and Fort were selected to College Sports Journal's 63-man FCS All-America squad for their outstanding seasons on the UNI defensive unit. Boothby led the Missouri Valley Football Conference in tackles-for-loss with 18.5, in addition to racking up 7.5 sacks and 86 total tackles. He was named a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Phil Steele and College Sports Madness following the season.
Fort was the FCS national leader in total tackles (184) and tackles per game (14.15), setting a new UNI single-season school record. He has been crowned the FCS National Defensive Player of the Year by College Sports Madness and College Sporting News, along with receiving first-team All-American accolades from The Sports Network, Walter Camp, Phil Steele, and Beyond Sports College Network.
Johnson finished fourth in the balloting for the Jerry Rice Award as the national FCS Freshman of the Year. He was named to the MVFC All-Newcomer team, along with being selected as honorable mention All-MVFC. On the season, Johnson racked up 822 rushing yards, 422 receiving yards and 12 total touchdowns.
