WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team needed extra time to defeat the St. Ambrose Queen Bees, 1-0.
Freshman Sarah McHugh rose above the crowd in a scramble off of a corner kick by senior Kelsey Dolder and headed the ball into the goal for the score in the 98th minute, sealing the victory for UNI on a golden goal rule.
Three Panthers tallied at least five shots on the night. McHugh led all players with seven shots with three coming on goal. Seniors Ashley Capone and Melissa Hagan each fired five shots with three shots and one shot respectively. Juniors Elizabeth Rodriguez registered three shots with one on goal and fellow junior Claire Clark filled the stat sheet with three shots.
Junior Morgan Gallagher fired two shots with one on goal while sophomore Caitlyn Fuller matched her with two shots with one on goal. Senior Kiki McClellan chipped in with two shots and sophomore Madisen Garman and freshman Annie Dale each fired one shot on goal in the match. Junior Grace Schield and sophomore Liz Frerichs each contributed with one shot in the match.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Zaideman tallied five saves in just over 97 minutes of play, posting her fourth shutout of the season.
UNI outshot the Queen Bees 33 to nine including a margin of 12 to five in shots on goal. UNI held the advantage in corner kicks, six to two.
UNI (6-7-0, 1-0-0 MVC) will be back in action on Thurs., Sept. 27 when they face off with Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake. The game will be played at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex with the first kick being at 7:00 p.m.
