Introduction to UNI Athletic Licensing Department

Athletic licensing promotes and protects the logos and marks of the University of Northern Iowa Athletic Department.  The goal of the licensing department is to ensure the public can identify with and trust the quality of any product bearing an official athletic department mark.

In order to ensure the legitimacy of official UNI athletic apparel, fans should look for the “officially licensed” products label on merchandise. The label guarantees the consumer that he or she is buying from a licensee and a percentage of the proceeds are going back to UNI.

The athletic licensing department markets and manages the demand for products displaying our marks and symbols to assure that our marks are used only on quality products with minimal liability to both the University and consumers.

WHO NEEDS A LICENSE?

Any vendor producing or selling  a product bearing the logos or marks of the University of Northern Iowa or making reference to the University of Northern Iowa’s logos or marks.  The vendor or manufacturer must have a license before offering products for sale.

WHAT CAN BE LICENSED?

The UNI Athletic Licensing Department will consider most products, but no products will be granted a license without the approval of the Director of Licensing.  This policy is in place to ensure that the products bearing the UNI marks and logos are high quality and in good taste.  The UNI Athletic Licensing Department also wants to ensure that all products bearing the UNI marks and logos represent the University of Northern Iowa in a positive manner.

The approval process helps prevent misrepresentation of marks and minimizes liabilities from harmful, hazardous or unfavorable items.

WHAT QUALIFIES AS A TRADEMARK?

A trademark is any mark, symbol, logo, color(s), nickname, letter(s), word, or derivative that can be associated with the University of Northern Iowa and its athletic teams.

WHAT ARE UNI’S TRADEMARKS?

The University of Northern Iowa owns certain trademarks.  Any design or presentation of these marks without permission is a trademark infringement.  If you have questions about what constitutes a trademark or what you can or cannot do please call the Athletic Licensing Department at 319-273-3168.
