Panthers Remain in Fifth After Day Two

Carbondale, Ill.- The University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team finished the second day of the MVC Championships in fifth place. UNI currently has 203 points in the meet. Natalie Johnson was the highest finisher for the Panthers on the day.

Johnson finished seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.07, a new season best for her. Jamie Pearson (59.27), Jody Peterson (1:00.34), and Kara Aaby (1:00.66) finished 11th, 14th and 15th respectively in the same event.

Chelsea Hartman took 15th place in the 400 IM, clocking in at 4:40.20. Tina Sherwood (4:46.94) and Rhennetta Bork (4:49.99) placed 18th and 19th in the 400 IM as well.

Jamie Pearson was the top finisher in the 100 butterfly for the Panthers. She finished with a time of 59.47 and took 14th place. Kayla McCormick (59.94), Lindsey Phelps (1:00.48), Kara Aaby (1:00.83), and Jessie Nemesi (1:01.11) finished 17th, 19th, 20th, and 21st respectively in the same event.

Phelps finished 10th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.38, a new season best for her. Elise Drewsen took 17th place in the same event with a time of 1:56.72, also a season best for her.

Caryn Knight had a season best time in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:06.79 and placed 10th. Sarah Hedeen (1:07.35) and Stephanie Paape (1:07.60) placed 12th and 13th in the 100 breaststroke as well.

The 800 freestyle relay placed fourth with a time of 7:43.67. The team consisted of Hartman, Becca Ortmann, Drewsen, and Phelps. The 200 medley relay took fifth place with a time of 1:46.27.

The MVC Championships conclude tomorrow with the preliminaries starting at 11:00 a.m.
