NCAA Championships Bracket Announced

Release: Monday 03/07/2012

The NCAA released the brackets for the Division I Wrestling Championships today, and UNI's five national qualifiers found their placements.

Two Panthers were awarded seeds, including redshirt sophomores Joe Colon (133) and Ryan Loder (184). Colon will be the No. 5 seed in his field, while Loder is a No. 8 seed.

Colon faces a familiar foe in his first round match. Ridge Kiley (17-14) faced Colon (25-2) during UNI's final regular season dual. Colon handed Kiley, ranked No. 19 nationally, a 9-0 major decision.

Loder (32-4) will also compete against a past opponent in Iowa's Grant Gambrall (10-10). Gambrall defeated Loder with a 4-2 decision last season, during the Panthers' dual with the Hawkeyes. The two did not meet during their teams' dual this season, as Gambrall was then wrestling at 197 pounds. Last year, Gambrall made quite the run at the NCAA Championships, placing third overall as a No. 12 seed.

Coming off his stunning championship run at the NCAA West Regional, Levi Wolfensperger (141) will face Rutgers' William Ashnault in the first round. Ashnault (24-14) placed fourth at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships to secure an automatic spot at the NCAA Championships.

David Bonin (157) will take on No. 4-seeded Walter Peppelman of Harvard in his first round match. Bonin (29-7) will look for revenge on Peppelman (26-4), who knocked him out of the NCAA Championships last season with a pin that occurred just 39 seconds into the match.

Blayne Beale (285) will also look to avenge an earlier  loss during his first round match. Beale is paired with No. 5-seeded Bobby Telford of Iowa. Telford (25-7) topped Beale (28-11) during the Iowa-UNI dual meet earlier this season with a 12-0 major decision.

Wrestling will begin Thurs., March 15 at 11 a.m. at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
