ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell in the quarterfinals of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon, dropping a 53-46 decision to Creighton at The Family Arena.
UNI senior K.K. Armstrong led all scorers with 17 points and junior Amber Kirschbaum led all players with 12 rebounds. Rachel Madrigal scored 13 for the Panthers.
UNI limited Creighton to 19-of-59 shooting (32.2 percent) for the game, and the Panthers hit 19-of-52 shots (36.5 percent). It was the first time all season that UNI lost a game in which it posted a higher field goal percentage than its opponent.
Creighton (18-12) was led by 15 points from DaNae Moore and an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double by Carli Tritz.
The Panthers connected on just 2-of-16 attempts from beyond the arc.
UNI (16-14 overall) pulled ahead 7-4 four minutes into the game after five early free throws from Madrigal, Kirschbaum and Armstrong. Creighton held a 15-14 advantage with 7:20 left in the first half before it used a 12-3 run to go up 27-17 with three minutes remaining. UNI got three buckets in the final three minutes of the half to trim the halftime deficit to seven points at 30-23.
With UNI trailing 34-25 early in the second half, Creighton got back-to-back three-pointers from Jordan Garrison and Ally Jensen to open its biggest lead of the game at 40-25. The Panthers responded in a big way, putting together a 15-2 run over the next eight minutes to pull within two at 42-40.
The Bluejays pushed their lead back to six at 48-42 with five minutes left. After a bucket by Madrigal to make it 48-44 with 3:48 remaining, UNI missed three shots with a chance to cut the deficit further over the next three minutes. Creighton drained 5-of-6 free throws in the last 30 seconds to seal the victory.
The loss snapped UNI's six-game winning streak at the MVC Tournament.
