AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Northern track & field squad produced two national qualifying performances Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. Junior discus thrower Jordan Williams (Monticello, Iowa) and junior pole vaulter Daniel Gooris (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned spots at the NCAA Championships with their efforts.
Williams placed fourth overall in the discus with a toss of 58.54m (192'01"). His heave tied his season-best mark set at the MVC Championships.
Gooris, who had already qualified in the decathlon for the NCAA Championships, also earned a qualifying performance in the pole vault with a fifth-place finish. Gooris's jump of 5.40m (17'8.5") was a career-high and ranks No. 4 on UNI's all-time best list in the pole vault.
Senior pole vaulter Sam Kranz (Sugar Grove, Ill.) saw his collegiate career end with a 15th-place finish. Kranz tied his season-best with a jump of 5.25m (17'2.75").
Senior Olimpia Nowak (Rawicz, Poland) placed 22nd in the semifinals of the women's 100-meter hurdles with a clocking of 13.62 seconds. Nowak had qualified for the semis with a season-best time of 13.51 on Friday.
Senior Traci Harms (Hampton, Iowa) finished her collegiate career in the hammer throw with a toss of 52.67m (172'10"), which placed her 46th overall at the meet.
UNI's 4x100 relay squad tallied a 19th-place finish with a time of 40.69 in the prelims. The team of Jarred Herring (Burlington, Iowa), Wilmot Wellington (Fairfield, Iowa), Derek Kramer (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Sebastian Barth (Gauting, Germany) missed moving on to the national meet by 0.71 seconds.
The 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
