CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The University of Northern Iowa women’s soccer team fell to The Citadel on Sunday afternoon, 5-0.
The Bulldogs scored in the 27th, 28th, 59th, 61st, and 74th minute. Mariana Garcia scored two goals for The Citadel while putting all three of her shots on goal. Jannel Johnson chipped in for the Bulldogs with a goal and an assist with two of her three shots coming on goal in the match. Jillian Meyer and Kimberly Maldonado were the other goal scorers for The Citadel and Ruth Leiva had one assist on the afternoon.
The Panther offense was once again held scoreless, but they had opportunities. UNI fired 11 shots in the match and put four of those shots on goal. Juniors Claire Clark and Grace Schield and freshman Annie Dale each tallied two shots with one on goal.
Sophomore Charlotte Jones chipped in with two shots, senior Melissa Hagan recorded a shot on goal, and sophomore Caitlyn Fuller and freshman Maggie Riley each were credited with a shot for the Panthers.
UNI was outshot in the match 16-11 including eight to four in shots on goal. The Panthers did hold the advantage in corner kicks with five to the Bulldogs’ three.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Zaideman played the first half between the posts for UNI allowing two goals. Junior Nicole Postel relieved Zaideman of her duties for the second half, turning away three Bulldog shots while allowing three goals.
UNI (3-6-0) will be back in action on Fri., Sep. 14 when they host the North Dakota State Bison. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Complex.
