Hello Panther Fans!
We just had a fantastic weekend! We got three wins against Indiana State, had a great Senior Day, and had an awesome BBQ after Sunday’s game with all of our families. We got another chance to play in the Dome which is always fun and we got some great support on our last conference weekend at home. This week we face Bradley at home on Tuesday and the Iowa Hawkeyes on Thursday. This weekend we head to Illinois to face Illinois State. It will be a very important weekend for us.
This weekend our bats came alive. We squared the ball up very well as a team! We scored lots of runs, hit multiple homeruns, and executed very well with runners on base. We had a lot of quality at bats which is a big focus of our offence. Quality at bats can be anything from hitting a hard line drive that gets caught, to an RBI double, to an eight-pitch at bat that ends in a strikeout. It helps our players focus on the process of the offense rather than the results and also helps us to remember that we can still be successful and get out. Getting out is part of the game…it happens but it doesn’t always mean that we didn’t do our job.
I had an absolute blast playing this weekend. We are really starting to come together as a team and feel the success of that. I know as a senior I am very greatful to have the teammates and coaches that we do and it has been a very interesting ride this year but I am glad that we are where we are and I wouldn’t trade our struggles for anything, they have made me appreciate the success more and I think that they will really have an impact on the under classman and help them to realize they can face and beat anything.
I hope that everyone has a great week, stay tuned for this week’s final Meet A Player with freshman Abbie VanVleet. (Sunday’s winning pitcher who threw quite the game, as her catcher I was very proud!!!)
Go Panthers!

Hello Panther Fans…
Hope you are all off to a great start to the week. WE HAVE FINALLY STARTED TO PRACTICE OUTSIDE!!! It is a great feeling as a ball player to be able to get back on the dirt and lace the cleats back up. While it is very nice to have full access in the UNI-Dome there is nothing better than stepping back out on the field and playing the game the “right” way.
Our field still has a few wet spots but our coaches are putting in hard work to get it ready to go by this weekend. We will be opening up at home against Wichita State. It will be our “Pink Game” in support of breast cancer. Hopefully we can get a good group of fans out to Robinson-Dresser to cheer us on.
This past weekend we played at Evansville and ended up 1-2 on the weekend. Definitely not the results that we wanted but there was some improvements in our offensive game one on day one of the series. We strung the bats together a little bit better than we had the past few weekends. The conference is definitely going to be a dog fight this year, everyone seems to be taking their fair share of wins and losses so it is more even across the board than I have seen in my four years of being here.
As finals week creeps closer and closer we are all trying to stay ahead of our classes and study hard to get those good grades in by the end of the year! I hope you all have a great weeks and as always…GO PANTHERS!

Hey Panther Fans!
I hope you are all having a fantastic week. We only have six weeks left in the semester, this year is flying by. It seems that each year I have spent here has gone a little quicker than the previous one, it’s a sad thought to think about.
We now have two conference weekends under our belt with a few less games on our MVC record than expected. We have had to cancel two Valley games this season due to weather. We are currently 3-1 in MVC play and are heading to Creighton tomorrow night for an Easter weekend series against the Jays. We were scheduled to play at home but are moving across state to a field a little less swampy. I know that the team was really looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd but the weather has clearly been a bit of a challenge this season, but hey…at least we are finding a way to play!
This past weekend at Southern Illinois we left early Sunday morning to avoid some bad weather but unfortunately hit some HEAVY snow right near St. Louis. We were put up in a hotel for the night to keep ourselves safely off the road. Here are some pictures of the team finding a way to occupy ourselves at the hotel….

It is always fun to get to hang out together and have a little fun in the hotels.

With all this crazy weather and our soggy field we are still practicing in the UNI-Dome and we are so grateful that we have it. It has really come through big-time for us this year will having to be indoors. It is great that we have access to a facility that allows us to set up a full field to practice on. Also, our new hitting facility Full Count has been great to us, giving us tons of access so we can get in and get better. There have been a ton of people that have helped us out and made adjustments with us with the curve balls we have been thrown this year so thanks to you all and for the families and fans that have made the changes and followed us on the road a few more times this year than expected…THANK YOU! Hope everyone has a great weekend while we are bringing home some more victories!
Go Panthers!

Hello Panther Fans!
Hopefully this is finding you doing well. I am more than ready for this winter weather to be on its way and for sun and warm weather to show up soon. We had a great weekend last weekend in Oklahoma. We played in the Mizuno Classic at Oklahoma State. We went 3-2 on the weekend, our first series win of the year and both losses came by one run.
We are seeing lots of good things in our play right now. It feels like things are finally coming together and we are on our way to good things, right where we want to be before opening up conference. We were much more offensively strong, we were much better at producing more runs this weekend than we have been all year. Pitching was very strong, our three freshmen performed very well in the circle.
Obviously with all these long trips we have been going on there has been a lot of bus time for us. Time on the bus is a blessing for some and for others it is a challenge! It is a great time to catch up on homework and get things done but driving the highway in crazy winds can leave some people a little bus sick! Whatever the trip though there is always fun to be had on the bus. Of course there is always one or two hours of study table to start the trip but then it is off to snooze-ville, movies, catching up on television series', and anything else we can think of to pass the time. A little bit of the Dan Patrick show can always be expected too! Some of the crazy ways that people can find to get comfortable on our busses are quite interesting!
Here are some pictures of the team just hanging out on the bus!
Seniors: Haley Kriener, Melissa Walls and Sam Reimer

Senior McKena Carlson just snoozing away....NOT during study table!

The Fisher Twins just being studious.

Melissa Walls, Haley Kriener, and Abby Pollow showing off Haley's black eye.

Freshmen Kristin Lock and Abby Pollow love their Beats...

Just a short little sneak peak of what life on the bus brings! Have a great day everyone.
Go Panthers!

Hello Panther Fans...
There is no doubt that the conditions here in Iowa are slightly different than what we were experiencing down in Arizona. The weather there was great this past weekend for our tournament at Arizona State. We saw some great competition facing two Big 10 teams and a PAC-12 team. We also faced University of Illinois-Chicago. We didn't finish the weekend with a great record but I would say that the scoreboard was far from depicting how we played.
We are playing pretty solid defense right now, we still have things to work on but overall we are starting to come together and play sharp out in the field. Offensively our bats weren't as hot this weekend as we would have liked them to be but we just need to get in the cages and then get back at it this weekend in Arkansas.
Coach Jake talks to us a lot about focusing on the process and not the results. If we look at our team right now we are definitely going through the process. When it comes time for conference we are confident that playing these high level teams will get us in top shape to win the Valley again. We are just going to keep chipping away each weekend getting a little bit stronger, faster and sharper as we get closer and closer to conference play.
Later this week we head down to Arkansas for another weekend tournament. We are ready to get back at it and take on what this weekend brings. That's all for now!
Go Panthers!

Hey Panther Fans...
Well it was quite the exciting weekend for Panther Softball and fans. We had an amazing turn out for our UNI-Dome Classic tournament. There were over 5,000 fans at our game against Alabama! That is by far the biggest crowd that I have ever played softball in front of. We were very close to breaking the attendance record for a regular season NCAA Division I game. That is awesome. It was great to see so many people show up to watch some good softball and it was a great experience to play in front of so many people.
This weekend had its ups and downs. We saw some great things in ourselves but also some things we need work on. We didn't always get the results that we wanted but it is a positive being able to take away things to work on and to see how much room we have to grow as a team. We will definitely be hitting it hard at practice this week before heading for Arizona this weekend. It will be nice to get to experience some sun and warm weather. Wish we could bring it back with us! Look forward to our "Meet a Players" continuing this week featuring freshman pitcher, Ellie Doughty.

Hello Panther Fans!
It is that time of year again! It's almost SOFTBALL SEASON. Friday, Feb. 8, we open our season at 7 pm in the UNI-Dome against the defending national champion Alabama. We are less than a week away from getting back on the field and doing what we love to do.
There is no doubt that we have been busy getting ourselves ready for the 2013 season. We couldn't be more excited or ready for it. Right away after we returned from Christmas break it was four full days of softball. Lifting, conditioning, pitching, defense, hitting ... we hit it hard to get our minds right and to get ready for spring practice.
We are extremely lucky to have the Dome. Very few Midwest teams have a facility where full-field practices can be run during the winter. We can set up a full field allowing us to have a full team practice and put together the infield and outfield so that we can do full team defense. Our outfielders can get realistic reads off the bat and we can sharpen our cuts and relays. We are very fortunate to be able to practice in the Dome. We have been working hard to prepare and perfect our game. Focusing on the little things and the process is the name of the game for us.
As a senior it is a bittersweet moment to realize that I am about to play my last first game and enter into my last season as a Panther. There have been so many experiences that I have gone through and so many friendships that I have made. I am excited to start this season with my teammates and take on the challenges, adversity and triumphs that we will face. We are ready for whatever comes our way. Bring on the 2013 season, we are ready!
See you on the 8th... Go Panthers!!!

Hey Softball Fans, I know it has been a while since I have written. It is getting to be that time of year when things get crazy with finals and the semester coming to an end.
The team has continued to stay busy with practice and lifting. We have had a few really tough Dome stair workouts the past couple of weeks. We tackled it though and got better because of them. A big thanks to our lifting coach Courtney Novotny and her staff for all that they do to get us better. They put a lot of time and effort into us and planning our workouts and we wouldn't see the success that we have and will continue to see without their dedication to getting us stronger and in better shape, so THANK YOU!
This past Monday we got to go spend a few hours with some girls at Bremwood. We got to eat dinner with them and do some bonding games as well as play a pretty intense dodgeball like game. It is always a good time when we go there and get to spend time with the girls and get to know them.
I will continue to do the Meet A Players after Christmas break, I want to make sure that you get to meet all of the new faces on our team. I am excited to go home for Christmas break. It is always good to go home and spend time with the family and not have to think about classes. Im excited because this break I will be spending a lot of time working in the Vet Clinic getting experience. We will be gone for quite a while and it will take some extreme dedication by all of our players to stay in shape and on top of our game but we have complete faith in each other and know that everyone on this team is dedicated to our team goals and will do their job to make sure we accomplish them.
I hope everyone is having a good week.
Go Panthers!

Hey Panther Fans...
Hope everyone has been having a great week. We are full swing into off-season now. Hitting it hard in the morning with weights and conditioning then defensive and offensive practices in the afternoon. Registration for spring semester is already starting to creep up and I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving break, only two more weeks.
The other day I was doing some searching online and I found this quote: "Make the least of what is gone, & make the most of what is to come."
This is something that I need to get better at. So many time when I have a bad hitting workout or at conditioning when I don't quite feel as good as most days I dwell on it. I stew on how I didn't get better and how I wish I could just go back and re-do that workout, find a way to make it better or make myself feel better. Even now with applying to Vet School I look back and wish that I would have started applications earlier or become certain about my decision sooner or studied Organic Chemistry for just a few more hours. But all of that stuff is in the past. No matter how much I think about it or how badly I wish it I can never go back and get those days back, I can't change what is already done. I just need to chalk it up, realize that not every day is going to be perfect and that although it stinks we have to live and learn not learn then live, if we could do that we would never have issues.
This is really important for me especially with off-season coming up and graduation. I can't change what is already done, I can only look forward and affect what is to come. Dwelling on things that are already gone only make our lives more stressful, instead we must learn to accept what we cannot change and make the best of the moments that are about to come.
Have a good weekend everyone!
Go Panthers

Hey Panther Fans!
Individual work outs are officially on us! Waking up for 6 am weights four times a week is here already! It is crazy to believe that fall is already over and we have begun individuals. Individuals are great for us. It is the time of year where we get more one-on-one time with the coaches and they are able to break down our swings and our defensive mechanics. We get to focus on the areas that we struggle with as well as work on the little things that are crucial to our success.
The unfortunate part of this season is we don't get any team practice. All of our work is done in small groups and the only time we are together is during lifting and team bonding. Coach V does a great job with organizing our team bonding during the "off-season". We get to focus on different things each week; communication, service, trust, etc. Team bonding is great for us to learn how to work together but it is also good for us to be able to reflect on ourselves as well.
This week we start concessions! We work the high school playoff games in the Dome. It is a great way for us to earn some money but also a good time for us to give back to the Dome and its crew and for us to get out and represent our program to people all across the state that come for the football games.
Have a good week every one!

Hey Panther Fans!
I hope that you all had a great weekend, I definitely did. On Saturday afternoon the whole team headed to my house in Dubuque for an overnight team hangout. There was loads of food and we had a lot of fun. It was the first opportunity that we had to spend quality time together outside of softball. It was our first chance to all be together having fun while also learning more about each other.
This past week was the final fall season of my collegiate career. The past 3 ½ years have absolutely blown by. Each year going a little bit faster than the year before. I have learned countless lessons and had more life experiences that I can even count. Every struggle, sacrifice, victory, adjustment, and achievement has taught me something. I can’t say that every moment has been easy or enjoyable but each of them has been worth it. There are a lot of things that I know now that I wish I would have known as a freshman. If I had, I probably would have cherished each moment and memory a little bit more. Those of us that get the limited opportunity to play college athletics at this level is slim. I got to be one of those people. I got to wake up every morning and be satisfied that I achieved a huge goal that I had. I get to wake up every morning and know that my journey with softball continues while for many it ended years ago. I get the opportunity to do something that a lot of people only dream of doing and I know that there are people that would trade places with me in a heartbeat.
Realizing this helps me to stay humble and to cherish the remaining time that I have left to play for this University, to wear a Panther uniform, and to compete on the softball field. This entire experience is one that I will cherish for years to come and seeing how fast the past years have gone makes me much more aware of my surroundings. It helps me to take them in with more appreciation and to give 100% so that no day or chance is wasted. To be able to play this game is a gift and to those that have yet to realize it, take it from me, enjoy every minute while it is in your grasp. I will savor every moment of this lifestyle for the rest of this year. Someday I know I will have to walk away from the game and when I do I will have no regrets.
Have a good week everyone!

Hey Panther Fans...
I hope you are all having a good start to your week. This is our last week of official fall practice! On Sunday we had our last fall game of the season. We took on Des Moines Area Community College and we brought it with our bats. We had more than 15 hits in 10 innings. Freshman Sam Olson hit two bombs. All three of the pitchers threw very well too. Sadly, we don't get to have our Purple Gold World Series this week, a series of three inner-squad scrimmages where seniors pick teams. We don't have quite enough girls healthy right now to make it competitive so we are having one more week of fall practice before we get a week off then its right back to individual work outs.
This past week the assistant wrestling coach Mark Schwab came and talked to our team about how to succeed. He talked about goal settings and how to get yourself to reach your potential. There were so many good things to take from his talk. The biggest thing that I took away from it was a quote that he gave us, "I will, I'll adjust, I'll find a way." This quote is very motivating to me and I think that anytime an athlete is struggling if they can find a way to do one of these three things they can make anything happen.
Midterms are coming up this week and next week so it is a big week for all of our girls with tests. There will be a lot of studying going on. Our team works very hard to make sure that we stay on top of our grades and reach our goals in the classroom. On the field isn't the only area that we work hard. We are dedicated to our school work and spend a lot of time working to do well in our classes. I hope everyone has a great week. Go Panthers!

Hey everyone...
Our team had a huge weekend this past week. We had our recruits come on their official visits. They stayed with a few of the freshman in the dorms and we got to hang out with them. It was really good to meet them and start getting to know them. We went to the volleyball game on Friday night and the football game on Saturday. Before the football game Coach V. put on a tailgate for the team and the recruits as well as our families. It was a lot of fun. We played yard games, which, if you know anything about our team got a bit crazy. Our team can be a bit competitive especially when it comes to playing each other!
Some of the team also went to the Panther Scholarship Club Tailgate to meet and introduce ourselves to the people who make our scholarships possible. They do a lot for us athletes and make it possible for us to be where we are and to have to things that we do. They are an important part to our success and we are very greatful for the generosity as well as their support for our program.
We capped off the weekend with a 10-inning game against Kirkwood Community College. We are still improving and have come a long way from where we started a month ago. We have been working hard in practice focusing on different things each day to help us get where we need to be when off-season starts.
Tune in later this week for our Meet A Player. Have a good week!

Hey all!
Another week of fall season is in the books. We hosted the Big 4 Classic this past weekend here in Cedar Falls. We took on Iowa, Iowa State, and Drake. We went 1-2 but took a lot of good things away from the weekend.
The biggest part of fall season is learning where we stand and what we need to work on. The Big 4 is definitely an eye opener and we are fortunate to be able to play in it. We get to face other Division I schools and see how we match up and what we need to continue to work on before spring gets here. There is no doubt that we have a lot of improving to do but everyday we become a little more comfortable playing together and learn more about each other's strengths and weaknesses, that is what fall is all about; learning and growing and seeing the areas that we need to work on in the off-season.
We have been working very hard in the weight room. We are there bright and early at 6 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. We start with conditioning in the dome before heading to the weight room to lift. Our lift is very focused around the Olympic lifts, which promote full body lifting and increase our explosion and power. Our team can definitely hold our own in the weight room. Max outs are coming soon, after that we really get down to business.
Other than lifting and practice we have been staying busy with class, study tables, team meals, and this past week we started our weakly team bonding lead by Coach V. Each week we have a new focus. We take time to talk about that focus and how it affects ourselves as well as our teammates and how we can use it to make us stronger on the field. It is really good for us and it definitely contributes to our success. We really appreciate that Coach V. takes the time to prepare something for us each week.
We get to play again this weekend against Kirkwood on Sunday. Our football team takes on North Dakota State on Saturday and the 2012 softball team gets to get recognized between the third and fourth quarters for our accomplishments last season including our MVC championship! It will be good to see old teammates as well as hang out with some recruits that will be on campus this weekend. Stay tuned later this week for our next Meet A Player featuring freshman, Kenzie Flaws! Have a good week Panther Fans!

Hey Panther Fans....
I hope you are all having a great day. I got a big biochemistry test out of the way last Friday so I am ready to have a good week.
We had our first fall game last Wednesday against Ellsworth Community College. We played very well. We looked sharp and had a lot of intensity. Freshman pitcher Abbie VanVleet threw all eight innings for us and allowed only two hits. It was a great start to her career as a Panther! We hit the ball well and with a lot of power. It was a good day for us on the field. We continue our fall season this week on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Upper Iowa.
I got to go to Iowa City on Saturday to watch our Panthers take on Iowa, I was disappointed with the outcome but still managed to have a good time. A lot of our team went up for the game and to support out fellow athletes. We all would have liked a "W" but I have no doubts that the guys will bounce back this weekend.
I am off to class here in a little bit, trying to catch up on some homework in the library while taking a little break to update you on our softball lives =) I have been spending a lot of time in the library this year, my schedule is packed with chemistry classes, one of the perks of being a biology major I guess. Have a great rest of your day!

Hola Panther Fans...
I hope you had a great week. It was a busy week for me. I had my first few exams of the year so my week was full of studying. As for the team it was our first week of full team practice. We spent a lot of time on team defense to get used to playing next to each other and to start learning each other's tendencies. Our pitchers looked good this week too. All of the newcomers are learning fast and it is very obvious that they will all be a great addition to our softball family.
Friday and Sunday we had inner squad scrimmages. I would say we looked pretty sharp for our first times playing together. Everyone had good at-bats and defense looked good too. We have our first fall game this week on Wednesday as we play Ellsworth Community College, I can't wait to get back into game mode.
Football season has finally begun! Our football team has had two great outings so far. A lot of our softball team went to the game Saturday night in the Dome and watched them put a pounding on Central State. I am very excited that I am back to spending Sundays watching NFL games and cheering on the Packers. Fall is definitely my favorite time of the year; football, sweatshirts, Halloween and of course my birthday, November 12, which I just so happen to share with Coach Jake.
That's all for now guys, tune in later this week for our next Meet A Player!
Adios

Hey Panther Fans! (Sept. 8, 2012)
We have so many new faces on our team this year I thought we should start introducing them to you! Every week this fall we will feature a different new comer, this week's Meet A Player is...
Freshman, Rachel Sedlacek!
Name: Rachel Sedlacek
Birthday: April 11
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Position: Outfield
Year: Freshman
Major: Movement and Exercise Science
What is your favorite color?
Green
What is your favorite thing about college so far?
Everyone here is really nice and welcoming; I love the atmosphere and school pride UNI has, along with the countless number of activities they have to offer, and of course softball! Some days the Piazza sets out some really great desserts too. =)
What are you looking forward to most about playing UNI softball?
Already I've learned so much new stuff I'm excited about getting better on the field and experiencing softball at the Division 1 level!
What are you afraid of?
Rodents. I can handle snakes, spiders, and bugs but rodents are the scariest. Like you can step on little bugs and spiders like aren't around a lot, tell me how you're going to squish a five pound rat crawling up your leg, no that stuff is scary.
What is your favorite food?
ALL food is my favorite food. My two main food groups are probably cheese and chocolate though.
If you could eat dinner with ANY 3 people, living or not, who would it be?
I'm going to have to go with two of the main people from One Tree Hill, Lucas Scott (played by Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (played by James Lafferty) then the main guy in the movie Never Back Down (which is my favorite movie) Jake Tyler (played by Sean Faris). Obviously, Channing Tatum would be the fourth.
What is your favorite quote?
"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, and live the life you've imagined" - Henry David Thoreau
Do you have any superstitions, if so what are they?
Not that I can think of.
What are your future goals?
I already know I eat too much here, because I love food so not gaining like 100 pounds is a pretty good goal. Okay, really, I want to help athletes become better athletes and help them like so many people have helped me. I am not sure what job that is yet, but of course I want to graduate college, and graduate school. Have a family...typical stuff.
Why did you choose to come to UNI?
I knew I wanted to play softball in college and the year before I was recruited I would always say "I really want to go to UNI, but I'm not sure if I can play college there". So, when they recruited me and I went on my visit I said I'd need about a month to decide...I called Coach Jacobs like three days later. I love that the campus is all close together, yet it's a larger college. UNI has so much to offer and it seemed like a great fit.
Who has had the most influence on your life?
Probably my mom and dad. They've supported me so much throughout my life, there is no way I'd be where I am today without them. They pushed me to be the best person I can be, and I am really grateful for that.
That's all for now! Have a great day everybody!

Hey Panther Fans! (Sept. 1, 2012)
Hope you are all having a good day. Everything with me has been busy as usual but I am
loving every second of being back in Cedar Falls and spending time with my teammates.
Last week we had individuals. It was really good to get back on the field and to be able to
see my new teammates in action. Individuals are nice for easing back into practice. This
week we get back to full team practice. Pitchers and catchers start at 3 p.m. and position
players join us at 3:45 p.m.. It is a great way for us pitchers and catchers to get our bullpen
practice in without having to miss out on anything during team practice.
We were back in the weight room on Tuesday and Thursday. We had some rough
morning condition workouts (those are always a grind) and spent time working on
technique for our Olympic lifts which really focus on our explosion. Morning workouts
can be really tough sometimes but we definitely see the results in the spring so it's all
worth it!
I wanted to share a quote for you to think about: "Strength does not come from winning.
Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to
surrender, that is strength." - Arnold Schwarzenegger
I really like this quote, it helps me to get through workouts and a lot of the other
difficulties that come along with being a Division One athlete. It helps me to stay positive
and a lot of times it helps me push myself through workouts and keeps me from letting
up. It reminds me that everything that I go through is developing me into a stronger
athlete and person, which make all the struggles worth it.
That is all I have for now, hope you have a great week. Talk to you soon!

Hello Panther Fans! (Aug. 24, 2012)
Welcome to another great year of Panther Softball. My name is Sam Reimer and I will be your blogger for the 2012-2013 season. I am a senior catcher from Dubuque, Iowa. I am majoring in biology and am currently working on applying to Veterinary School. I love country music, cooking, riding horses and scrap booking. I recently found a love for sushi and my favorite movie is Titanic. I actually love school and am very excited to be back.
The first week of classes is always fun for me but for our team it was a busy week. We have 12 new faces on our team so far this year with walk-on tryouts still to come. It has been great getting to know my new teammates and show them around campus. This past week we showed them where their classes are, the athletic facilities, and introduced them to people they need to know. Starting Sunday night the week was full of meetings. We had our All-Athletes Meeting, our team meeting, a meeting with Director of Athletics Troy Dannen, newcomers had physicals and we had a team meal and captain led meeting. We had open field Tuesday thru Friday and we start individual practice this week, split up into small groups by positions. We have our first weight lifting sessions on Tuesday and Thursday as well. Tonight we had our 3rd annual SAAC hosted Welcome Back Picnic for all the student athletes, it also happened to be a talent show, "Panther's Got Talent". Our girls did great and were quite funny doing their rendition of an act from Mean Girls although Women's Basketball took first. Their Michael Jackson routine was great.
We are ready for a full week of practice and can't wait to get back to the grind. Talk to you soon Panther Fans and have a great week!

Yesterday we wrapped up the Southern Illinois series with a W! With the win on Sunday, we clinched the regular season Missouri Valley conference championship!!! It's been a fun road up to this point, and I imagine it's going to get even better! We have one more conference series next weekend against Illinois State at home. It's our senior weekend, and the first time this year that we will be playing ball and not having to worry about SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!! Yippeeeee!!!!!
Spring semester finals are this week. We have all been studying and working our tail ends off for all of our tests coming up. Can't wait to put a wrap on the school work! Can't wait to just focus on playing ball!!!
Like I've said all year... this team is very unique and extremely special. I'm personally going to cherish these final moments of the season, and try to savor all of great moments with my teammates.
Again, thank you fans for all of the support. Come out this weekend for our final series of the conference season!

Hi all!
Last weekend we traveled to Omaha to take on Creighton University. We had a successful weekend, even though the weather did not allow us to play on Saturday. We came out of the weekend with two wins, and wrapped up the series. This past Wednesday, we traveled to Peoria, Ill., where we played Bradley. We were able to get out bats going late in the game, and pulled out the first game, 6-1. The second game was a good learning experience for everyone, and really humbled us. We can never expect to win. Like Coach Jake always says, "the game of softball doesn't owe you anything. You have to earn it."
This weekend we finally have a series at home! We will take on Missouri State. The rest of the week is dedicated to getting re-focused as a team. We will keep fighting, and continue to move forward. The past is the past and we will get through!
Come out this Saturday to support breast cancer at our games! Thanks for all the amazing support from our fans!
Go Panthers!!!

Hey there!
This past Tuesday we made a trip to Western Illinois University where we were scheduled to play two games at 3:00 and 5:00 pm. Because of weather, we only were able to get the first game in. The final score was 8-0 in 5 innings. The score of this game is not telling of how the game really was. I think that we won this game because we flat-out... out worked them. Western Illinois was aggressive with their bats and their base running. We were able to string together some huge hits that were timely- where as Western Illinois hits were more scattered. I had an outstanding defense behind me on the field that came up with some great plays throughout the entire game.
After the game, we all showered up and drove through Burlington, Iowa, where we stopped at Coach Gerdes's parents house for some amazing walking tacos and Oreo dessert!!! It was so much fun sitting around with teammates and coaches and just relaxing, enjoying everyone's company. Shout out to Mr. and Mrs. Gerdes for hosting us at their home and providing enough food to feed a ton of hungry girls!!! Also, thank you to Mrs. Plein for some yummy cookies as well! You guys are awesome!!!
This weekend on Friday and Saturday we host the Drake Bulldogs. Games have been changed to Friday at 4:00 and 6:00 pm, and just one game on Saturday at Noon. The change was made because of possible rain on Saturday. Come out this Easter weekend to support Alzheimer's and watch our Alzheimer's game on Saturday! Senior shortstop Mackenzie Daigh has worked very hard to put this entire event together for the team. It's a great cause, and we are hoping to get a great turn out! Bring all of your family, coworkers, and friends!
Each game is a new game. The past does not and never will define our future. Each pitch/hit/throw is new, and we will keep working hard to stay in the present and focus on "The Now."
Go Panthers!!!

Another week in the books!
This past weekend we earned another conference sweep against Indiana State University! Our bats have been heating up and have really given our defense some relief late in our games by scoring security runs early in our games. Mid-week, we had a game in Ames against Iowa State University. Again, our bats were strong and we were able to get an 8-0 victory in 5 innings!!! Third baseman Whitney Plein hit a homerun, junior outfielder Melissa Walls had a homerun, and sophomore first baseman Gina Brown also hit one out.
Senior center fielder Allie Galvin has been having some outstanding games lately at the plate. Her slapping and bunting game has helped out our team tremendously. Her speed on the bases has been a huge factor to our success.
Our outfielders and infielders have had amazing games the past few weeks. As a pitcher, it's awesome having such strong players behind me to make great ground-ball and fly-ball plays.
We leave today at 1:00 pm to go to Wichita Kansas for our third conference series of this season. We had a great couple practices this week along with two tough lifting sessions. We are ready to work hard, and get another couple W's under our belts!
Thanks again for all the support, your encouragement and loyalty means the world to us!
Go Panthers!!!

Yeah purppp!!
Today we travel to Indiana State for our second conference weekend series! Last weekend we got our first sweep of conference ball against Evansville University at our home opener! Mackenzie Daigh had an EPIC grand slam during the second game last Saturday, propelling and leading the team to victory. It was a great way to start conference play, but we know that we can't get ahead of ourselves and that we need to keep playing one game at a time.
Yesterday, it was rainy outside so we had to practice inside (at the dome.) However, in my eyes as a team we had one of the best practices of the year. Everyone was sharp with their plays and more mentally focused than ever. How you practice is a direct reflection of how you will play, so I feel great about this coming weekend!
Tuesday and Thursday this week we had a couple good lifting sessions in the early morning, and even though we are all a little sore- we're keeping the mindset that this extra hard work is going to give us an edge over our components/competition and allow us to "peak" during the time of season that counts.
I'd like to send out a GOOD LUCK to the UNI women's basketball team in their WBI Championship game either March 25th or 27th! You guys are awesome! Bring home the trophy!
Go Panthers!!!

It's been an amazing spring break so far! We are currently in Florida, and it couldn't be more beautiful! This past weekend we had 5 games in Clearwater, and ended up with a record of 3-2. We had a few frustrating games as a team, but we were able to work some things out and get back on the same page to earn couple W's.
Today, the coaches took us to Clearwater beach before we left for Jacksonville. It is our day off, and it was really fun for us to do something unique and fun together in Florida. We went to surf shops, swam in the ocean, built sandcastles, tackled teammates into the water, collected sea shells, and a couple of us even went jet skiing. We have also had some free time as well this past weekend (Thursday-Sunday) to spend time with family after games to go to the beach, out to dinner, and shopping. Thank you to all the parents and family members who came out to support us and spend time with us over break. It means the world to us that you are dedicated, we wouldn't be where we are today without all of your love and support! We love you all!
Tomorrow we have two games at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. We play the University of Northern Florida both games, and are looking forward to the practice of what conference games will be like with the double-header.
I hope everyone is having a great week, and again thanks again for the amazing support we've had here in Florida. We appreciate all of our fans, thanks for always standing by our side in both the good and the bad!
Go Panthers!!!

Hello!
It's been a quick week, and a quick turn-around from our Colorado trip last weekend! We are leaving for Florida early Thursday morning, and I couldn't be more excited! Finally, after getting caught up on homework and midterm exams, spring break here we come! And there is no better way to spend break then playing softball games with awesome teammates, on real dirt, out in the warm sun. This is our one trip of the year that we get the privilege to fly, and not road trip.
Practices and lifting this week have gone really well. In practice we're sharpening up on our team defense, as well as working on the simple mechanics that have gotten us to where we are today. Position players are working their spots, and pitchers and catchers have been working hard on adjustments and preparations for the upcoming week.
Last weekend in Colorado was a blast. We went 3-2, and again, learned a lot about things we can improve on. I know that there is a lot that I can improve on personally next time I'm on the mound. I need to be able to overcome adversity, and change my approach when things aren't going the way that I want them to. Our bats proved to be a lethal weapon, and I think our team overall gained a lot of confidence in the batter's box.
One thing that COACH GERDES reminded all the pitchers and catchers of today is that we're not going to Florida for some fun in the sun and goofing around on the beach. We are going to Florida to win games. When we come back, the most important games begin. Conference games are what we prepare ourselves for. Those are the games that truly matter.
I hope everyone's week has gone well. I would like to give a huge shout-out and thank you to all the family and friends who came out to Colorado to support us. We appreciate you all so much!
Have a good rest of the week!

We're home from Memphis!
This past weekend we went to Memphis, Tenn., and played against some great teams! We beat Missouri State (5-3), Western Illinois (5-0), Memphis (3-2), Southeast Missouri State (2-1) and fell short to Miami of Ohio (0-2). We ended the weekend at 4-1, and all around brought a lot of positive things we did in the games home with us. Even though we had a successful weekend, there is still a lot of work to do. Like Coach Jacobs said, the games this past weekend were a direct reflection of the practices we had that week. So, we are working really hard to keep mentally focused and make sure we have a couple good practices until we leave again (for Colorado) on Thursday.
Tennessee was a lot of fun! The bus trip (to and from) wasn't as long as I had anticipated. We watched some great movies and had some really good team bonding. I had never seen the movie Warrior, but I can now say that I have a new favorite movie. It was the most inspirational and intense movie I had ever seen! The whole team had a good time watching that movie on the way home. If you haven't seen it before, I definitely recommend watching it!
After our games on Friday, the coaches took the team to a restaurant in downtown Memphis called Kooky Canuck. I guess it was on the TV show Man vs. Food at one point, and has some really cool (and huge) items on the menu! Their signature item is THE KOOKAMONGA, which is 4 pounds of pure beef on a bun topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and cheese. They say that if you can eat all this food in under 60 minutes, the meal is on them and you get your picture on the Kooky Canuck Wall of Fame! No one on the team decided to take the challenge...
When we were seated at the restaurant, they put us right next to the huge front windows where we could see all the people walking up and down the street going into different restaurants and shops. What I thought was amazing, was that about every ten minutes a horse and carriage (with lights all over it and people riding inside) came clunking down the street. It was beautiful! It looked like so much fun. I had a good time waving to all the people taking rides. I also had a great time admiring all the gorgeous horses.
We have a busy week, and an even busier weekend! Can't wait to do some damage in Colorado! Thanks for all the support!
Go Panthers!!!

Hi!
It's finally Friday! The Panther softball team (and especially coaches) had a hectic weekend last weekend trying to figure out what to do when the turf machine for the UNI-Dome had a mechanical failure, and broke down. At the last minute, the dome tournament was moved to Ames, Iowa for the weekend.
Our record for the weekend ended up being 3-2. We beat Valparaiso (6-0), Wisconsin Green Bay (9-1 in five innings), and Nebraska Omaha (3-2.) We fell short of both North Dakota (4-8 in nine innings) and Western Illinois (1-4).
Even though the tournament didn't fall exactly the way we wanted it to, our team will continue to work hard and keep a positive attitude. It is a long season, and we have many more games ahead. Like I have said before, the beginning of the season doesn't matter at all compared to where we want to be at the end of the season. After the weekend, we were able to evaluate some things we needed to work on and get better at.
We are excited to keep working hard and having fun, especially next weekend when we travel to Tennessee for our next tournament.
Thanks to the family members of our players who came out to Ames to support us last weekend. We appreciate you!
Go Panthers!!!

HELLOOOO SHARK WEEKEND!
It's game day!!!!! Do you know how long I have waited to write this blog!?? All of our preparation has come down to this very day where we can show everyone how hard we have worked.
The first tournament is a really special time of year for our team. I believe that this is the tournament that sets the tone for the rest of the season. Coach Jacobs has stressed to us the past couple weeks about how the first tournament isn't what matters. Our first five games we play this weekend, in the grand scheme of things... do not matter at all compared to where we want to be (and should be) at the end of the season. However, we're all ready to come out on Friday and DOMINATE.
I see something different in this team, and no matter what the outcome of the games are this weekend... I KNOW that each and every one of my teammates is going to give their all for the TEAM!!! Without each individual member, we would not be complete. We have a unique chemistry, and this year the coaches have made that a priority.
I am truly blessed to have my final college softball season with this special group of girls. This team beats with one heart, and with one common goal in mind. I would be lying if I were to say that it's just our athletes that make this team so special.
I have never met a more dedicated, driven, and passionate coaching staff. Our coaching staff puts in the time, effort and dedication to make our program stand out above others. They have implemented a "family" atmosphere, and have consistently shown to have their athletes' best interest in mind when it comes to morals, character, and values. They see us as PEOPLE rather than just seeing us as their JOB. They want, just as much as us, to succeed. They push us each day thrive under any given circumstance.
Our trainer Emily Link is absolutely amazing. She is just as passionate about us being healthy and making sure we are able to play as our coaches and my teammates are about softball. She is part of our unique family, and we wouldn't be the same without her.
Courtney and Scott, our strength and conditioning coaches are passionate about us being STRONG and CONDITIONED. They know that if we want to be the best, we need to train like the best. They have put in early mornings and long hours pushing us and forming us into stronger and faster versions of ourselves. Without them, we would not be where we are today. Courtney and Scott are part of our family. I want to take the time to thank all of the parents and fans who have supported us in previous seasons. We would not be where we are today without all of your dedication and support. We have something to prove. NO REGRETS.
Go Panthers!!!

13 days until the first pitch of our first game!!!
The team is getting antsy as we count down the days. The past two weeks practices have been tough, but it has been more of a mental grind than anything else. The anticipation we face right now is probably our biggest struggle. As long as we keep our focus and hearts towards our season goal, these next few weeks of practices I'm sure will be much easier for us.
Everything else has been pretty consistent for us. We have begun live pitching (where our pitchers are pitching to batters on the team.) We do this usually on Fridays as well as Sundays.
Aside from softball, classes are starting to pick up a bit, and we are starting to get prepared for the season by talking to our professors about missing classes and staying on top of homework assignments.
We are still doing team bonding events (like Bremwood,) and are even planning another fun event for this next Friday. I think we are really making a difference in these girls' lives, and it's such a rewarding feeling. I hope everyone has had an amazing week, keep bleeding purple and gold!
Go Panthers!!!

Hello!
We had a good start getting back into the swing of softball and school after a long Christmas break. This week, we have been lifting in the mornings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. After classes, we have had either an offense or defense individual practice. Next week we can look forward to full team practices after classes in preparation for the season which is just right around the corner!
After a beautiful warm days earlier this week, Cedar Falls has now been plagued with snow and freezing cold winds. I've learned the hard way that I need to slow down a bit while driving, because those stoplight intersections show no mercy when it comes to ice. Oh winter, how I've missed you!
Along with team practices, next week our team starts academic updates as well as study table hours. We will meet with our coaches to determine our academic goals for the semester, as well as plan ahead and go over assignment requirements. After doing these meetings for four years, I have finally come to realize how much they have helped me academically. It is nice having someone help to hold you accountable and keep you on track academically (especially when we will be traveling so much to play ball.)
Coach Jake bought us these awesome new goggles that we tried out for the first time today at hitting. Because they were expensive, we only have one pair... so we all share. Coach explained the goggles as "a workout for your eyes." My best way of explaining the goggles would be that you were hitting with a strobe light attached to your face. New things to try out during practices are always exciting for our team. We all had a good time trying to focus extra hard on the ball which seemed to be vanishing and then reappearing again as it approached the plate.
That's about all the new things I have for this week! I hope everyone had an amazing week!
Go Panthers!!!

It's 2012!!!
Happy belated New Years!!! Our team came back a few days early to get a head start on workouts before classes officially start on Monday. Wednesday's workouts were tough. We had 6 a.m. conditioning and lifting. At noon we got together for a team practice, and then after we met up for lunch and a meeting. The end of our day consisted of individual hitting workouts. I assume that Friday's workout will be very similar (we just got informed by Coach Jake that we will need to bring warm clothes to our morning workout Friday because we will be running hills outside.) Monday is the start to our second semester of classes, and then ... soon to follow ... is our first game on Feb. 10! Finally, we will be able to show off all of our hard work and dedication in the fall and off season! For a team community service/bonding event, this weekend we will be going to Bremwood School in Waverly. There we will be able to connect with and get to know better the girls who are living there at this point in time. It is our second time going, and I'm sure it will be just as much fun (if not more fun) than the first time we visited. I'm excited for the season!!! I hope all our fans are too!!!
Go Panthers!!!

Finals are FINALLY over!!!
All the stressful nights of staying up late to study... and then waking up early to study some more are done! We have a three week break before we need to be back on the fifth of January for softball. Our strength and conditioning coaches have given us a weights/conditioning workout to do over break so that we are able to stay in shape. We're expected to keep hitting, throwing and pitching (on our own) so that we're 100 percewnt prepared for the spring season! I won't be blogging for the next couple weeks because of break, but I hope everyone has an amazing Christmas with friends and family! When we get back from break, season will be just around the corner. I hope everyone is excited for a great year, and is ready to come out to support us and cheer us on!!!
Merry Christmas, and go Panthers!!!

Hello All!
I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving break with family and friends. I definitely ate my fill of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, snickerdoodle salad, puppy chow, double chocolate cake, stuffing... the list goes on and on.
Here at school, finals are just around the corner. All the hard work of the semester is coming down to the final few days of classes in just over a week. According to NCAA rules, coaches are not allowed to workout with us next week or the week of finals both individually and in a group setting. We will be doing our softball workouts on our own, and putting in the time just like normal... but around our different study and test schedules.
After finals week, it's CHRISTMAS BREAK!!! I can't believe my favorite month of the year (December) is already here!!! Now we just need a little bit of snow so that I'm able to drink hot cocoa, build snowmen, and watch my favorite movie of all time... ELF. My neighbors (Courtney Dunker, Laura Turner, and Whitney Plein) have already gotten into the Christmas spirit by putting up stockings and lights in their apartment along with a fully decorated Christmas tree.
This coming Monday, our team is getting together for the traditional gift exchange at Jack and Arnies Steak House. I'm looking forward to seeing all the different types of gifts everyone receives from their beloved teammates.
I know many girls on the team are looking forward to Final Test Care Packages they will be receiving soon from their parents (ahem... mother.) These packages relieve stress and are a great way to show your hard working daughter how much you love and care about her! J
Hope everyone has a wonderful and happy week!

Ahoy!
It's the Friday before Thanksgiving break!!! Like every other it seems- this week has really flown by. The team registered for their spring semester classes starting on Monday. I just registered for my FINAL SEMESTER OF COLLEGE classes. I really can't believe this is happening. Where did the past 4 years go?
Our team had an amazing Thanksgiving dinner at Coach Jake's house on Sunday night. Everyone contributed to the meal in some way by bringing food, plates, cups... etc. There was a lot of turkey, ham, cheesy potatoes, stuffing and rolls... the list goes on and on. I think a bunch of us were a little hesitant to eat as much as we ended up eating, because we knew it was very possible we might see it all again the very next morning after conditioning. However, the food was just too good to pass up and we ate until we could eat no more. It was great team bonding for everyone to be together enjoying each others company in a non-softball type setting. I had a blast.
Weights have been really tough the past three weeks. Our strength and conditioning coaches are working us hard so that we are able to have a full week of relaxation and recovery over Thanksgiving break. Also, the team has been working really hard at the concessions stand during the high school playoffs at the dome fundraising for our program. Our last two days of working the concessions stand are this Friday and Saturday. We've all put in long hours, especially COACH GERDES. Coach G is the master of the concessions stand, I'm sure everyone would be lost without her there solving problems and keeping everyone organized.
I think that's all for now! I wish everyone an early... HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! Eat lots of turkey, enjoy family, and take long naps. That's what I'll be doing anyways. J
Go Panthers!!!

Greetings!
We are currently in Week 3 of off-season! There are two more weeks of tough work ahead, both mentally and physically, but we are really beginning to feel and look stronger every day. We continually strive to get better on the field, off the field, in the class, and in the weight room. Keep up the great work, ladies! Team Tuesday was slightly different in which Coach V (Van de Hoof) asked us to brainstorm and think of a word and activity to do for a service project; reverse the role activity that went well and led to some great ideas. We are excited to finalize the details and take our plan into action! Concessions, for the Iowa High School Football Playoffs, continue this week working all day Friday! Come, watch some great football games, visit our stand and enjoy the end of the week! We now take a second to recognize our fellow locker room mates, the women's soccer team! They played extremely well this season and had an outstanding playoff run! Great job! Volleyball will host Creighton Friday at 6pm in the McLeod Center. Good luck ladies! Also, UNI football takes on Southern Utah Saturday at 6pm in the Dome. We wish them the best of luck as well, and give a shout-out to all the seniors on Senior Night! That wraps up this week for Panther Softball. Hope you have a great weekend, and talk to you all in a week!
Go Panthers!!!

Hola!
This week's post is going to be short and sweet! This has been a tough week for the UNI softball team! It's our second week of 6 a.m. (four times-a-week) lifting! I think our bodies are finally getting used to waking up at the early times, which is a good thing! We're getting stronger, and pushing ourselves every day. Some of our girls have even beaten the maxes they set just two weeks ago! Great job girls! Good luck to the men's basketball team tonight as they host Dubuque for their exhibition game; it's exciting that basketball season is here already!!! Also, good luck to the UNI volleyball team as they play tonight at Bradley. Not much new here this week, just working hard and getting better... faster... and stronger. Hopefully next week there will be a little bit more to talk about! Until then, I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
Go Panthers!!!

Bonjour!
This week was the first week of our individuals and our 4-times-a-week weight lifting! It's amazing how much work you can get in in such a short period of time. This also leaves a lot more free afternoons to work on homework and study! Yay! Our lifting coach COURTNEY NOVOTNY surprised the team Thursday morning by letting us play some basketball and scrimmage against each other! It was a good workout, and extremely competitive. I think everyone can agree on the fact that HANNAH BORSCHEL is the best basketball player alive. Her shooting technique and defense are sheer perfection.

WHITNEY PLEIN
Favorite Color: Purple. Purple for life.
Favorite Food: I love cheesecake.
Favorite Author: If I'm feeling romantic, I like to read Nicholas Sparks. If I'm feeling like drama or suspense, I like James Patterson.
Favorite Professional Team: Baseball, football... what are we talking here? I'm a pretty big Chicago fan all around. But I do like the Rockies.
Favorite Day of the Week: Saturday because I can sleep in!
Favorite Holiday: FOR SURE CHRISTMAS, hands down. I love snow. I like the music, the decorations, and the atmosphere. I love the idea of Santa.
Favorite Cartoon Character: Tom and Jerry.
Favorite Softball Memory: Last fall when we played in the fall classic in Ames. I felt like I played some of my best softball, and it was cool because my dad got to see it.
Favorite Thing about UNI: I like how it feels like a big campus, but also a small campus. I don't have to see the same people every day, but I can also see the people I want to see. It's like a big town and a small town all in one.
If you could be president for the day, what would you want to do? I'd want to tour the White House. I'd want to take a ride in Air-Force One. I'd want to listen to the education ideas everyone has because I feel like some are not very beneficial to the students. But that's just me being a teacher.
What are some things on your bucket list? I want to learn how to fly, jump out of an airplane, and visit Ireland/Europe.
If you could be an actor/actress, who would play you? I'd want Kate Hudson to play me. I like her. As a person she's calm cool and collected. No drama surrounding her life. And her movies are fabulous.
What is one talent you wish you had? I wish I could sing.
Do you have any superstitions? Oh my gosh. When I play I have to hit with the same person before the game, I have to take all the same rounds in the cage, I have to play catch with the same person, and the same person has to throw me front toss.
What are some of your future goals? I want to get a job, a house, and hopefully get married. I want to be able to coach both softball and basketball, maybe a head softball coach position and an assistant basketball coach.
What's some advice about college you would give to an incoming freshman? Enjoy it; it's some of the best years of your life.
If you had a genie and were allowed to make three wishes, what would they be?
- 1) I want to cure cancer.
- 2) I would want money, but I'd donate to charities and people who have helped me in my life.
- 3) I would want endless availability to eat out at restaurants for free for the rest of my life.
If you were stranded on an island and only allowed to have three items to help you survive, what would they be? (I told her she couldn't ask for a boat or limitless supplies of a certain thing.) I need something to collect water. I want a clean barrel. I'm thinking I'll need a gun to shoot all the animals for food. I should also have a practical survival book. Those would be my three items.

Well, hello!!!
Thank you to JAMIE FISHER and GINA BROWN for covering for me during my busy week last week! My tests went well! Glad they're over! This week was our off-week for softball. On Tuesday and Thursday morning, we did our conditioning and weight workouts at 6 a.m., but other than that... there was nothing really going on besides classes and meetings. It's crazy how many hours there are in a day! I'm sure some of my teammates can attest to this, but I just can't get over how BORING life is without softball! What did I do with all my free time this week you might ask!? Well, let me tell you.
- I took naps.
- I went shopping and bought some new clothes (which is not something I have no money for... by the way.)
- I spent some quality time in Jimmy Johns eating a #9 Italian Night Club (no tomatoes and no onions, please.)
- I "creeped" on Facebook, in which I was remarkably able to trace back some pretty ugly pictures from about five years ago of my roommate/best friend. Waste of time? Probably.
- I painted a canvas? Not sure where that came from.
- I had a lot of extra time to study!!!!! COACH GERDES will probably be very upset at me for not having this as my #1 bullet-point, but go ahead and mentally put it up there at the top of the list. I really did try and use a lot of my extra time for homework and studying. I promise.
So yep, that's pretty much it. Thank God for softball.
This weekend we have a lot of really exciting things going on! There are 11 recruits that are coming to campus to attend the UNI Football game, as well as do a little bit of team bonding with ice cream and a bonfire! Before the football game on Saturday, the families of the recruits and athletes are invited to attend a pre-game softball tailgate! There will be lots of food and fun games! I'm excited to meet all the new girls and their families! Next week we start 4-times-a-week weights/conditioning in the mornings at 6 a.m. as well as individual practices. DR. LUND of the University of Northern Iowa took the time to explain to our team Thursday night about the importance of our off-season training. He was able to break everything down that we do in the weight room, and apply it to how it will help us succeed during our spring season. His rationale for all of our hard work during the off-season, helped to show how everything will truly be worth it. Shout out to DR. LUND! Thank you so much for your time and thoughts, it was very motivational! I hope everyone reading has had a great week!!!

Hey Everyone!!
This is Gina Brown and Jamie Fisher covering for Jaye Hutcheson this week, due to the three tests she is studying hard for! This past week we started it off with the last purple and gold game, crazy to say, but the gold team won once again (We are on the gold team)! Looks like the purple team owes us gold team members a nice, expensive steak dinner! Tuesday's team bonding was very important this week having to do with trust. "I'll put it like this - everybody has their bad games and good games. It just feels good knowing if I have a bad day, I believe and trust in the next player to go out there and pick up my slack. It's going out there and playing for your team. We want to play for our team, our school and our coaches." The activity for team Tuesday was the trust fall and then a group trust fall. It was fun and good team bonding! Thursday's game against Iowa Central is now cancelled, and we will have an inner squad scrimmage. Friday, October 14 will be our last practice outside for the fall! Oh how time flies when you're having fun!!
Here's an awesome video that William Galvin, (Allison Galvin's Dad) made for us!

This past weekend was our homecoming football game, as Jaye had mentioned in the latest blog. We came out with a big W against Indiana State, the final score was 23-9. Good luck this weekend to the volleyball team who plays at Drake and Creighton, to the golf team who golfs at Arkansas!! And good luck to the football team who plays at South Dakota State this weekend!! GO PANTHERS!!
Thank you to all our fans that came out to our fall games, we appreciate your support and hope to see you in the spring! Also good luck to Jaye on her three tests!

It's Homecoming Week!!!!!
This week has really flown by! Our UNI Homecoming home football game is this Saturday at 4:00 p.m.! The UNI Panthers will be taking on Indiana State... good luck guys! We will be there cheering you on! Maybe this week went by so fast because the softball team was keeping really busy with scrimmages and weights. On Monday, October 3rd and Wednesday October 5th, we played the first two games of our Purple/Gold World Series! I was hoping to come out of the games with a couple of W's and about $20.00 saved in a delicious steak dinner. Unfortunately, it didn't exactly turn out as I had planned. Gold team turned up the heat with outstanding defense and offense- beating the purple team (my team) and showing no mercy. I'm going to go ahead and leave the scores of the two games out... just because I know some of my teammates (not me of course...) are a little bitter, and I want to respect their feelings. As a pitcher, it was fun and challenging to compete against some of the best hitters in our conference. I think as a pitching staff we all learned that even though we know a lot about the strengths/weaknesses of the hitters we were up against, we can't try and pitch to their particular weaknesses. If their strength is hitting where our strength is to pitch- we need to beat them with our strengths. Yes, low inside (for example) may be one of my teammates favorite pitches, that one pitch that they could take yard more than any other. But, as a pitcher- my low inside drop feels great today, and I am confident enough in it to make it my "go to" pitch. Am I going to go away from this pitch just because I know the batter COULD smoke my ball? No. If I'm confident with my inside drop, I'm going to make HER best beat MY best. I think that was the main lesson our pitching staff learned during the Purple/Gold World Series this year, and it was a much needed one.
This Tuesday and Thursday in the weight room has been extremely intense! On Tuesday, the team did max-outs on clean, squat and bench press. Thursday, we maxed out on front squats and dead lifts. You know that people are working hard (to their breaking points) when they are falling backwards onto the ground because their legs have given out. You know that people are working hard when somebody was able to max squat 285 pounds, and 280 pounds for dead lift (ahem GINA BROWN...). JAMIE FISHER and ALLIE GALVIN also had a massive dead lift of 280 pounds, and LEAH EMBRY had a front squat of 240 pounds. COACH NOVOTNY explains how important maxing out is for our team... and how these results will be used and built upon for the rest of the season.
"Max-outs are important because we need to be able to make sure we know where our baseline is to improve our strength. That way, in a couple of weeks, we can see our improvements of where we were compared to where we are now. This year, everyone who is back improved from last year's maxes. This goes to show how much stronger everyone is. I think that max-outs actually help us out a lot with team building. It's fun to see everyone cheering each other on," said Novotny.
COACH NOVOTNY has a plan for the year, and she's excited to keep building on our strengths.
"I want to make sure to transfer our strength into explosive power, and then ensure that everything carries over once the spring season starts up. The team has already showed huge improvements from last year, even with conditioning. It helps a lot that we have good communication between the strength and conditioning coaches, trainers, coaches and players. Everyone is staying really positive and working hard. Hard work pays off."
Go Panthers!!!

Hey Everyone!
It has been a busy week for the UNI Softball team! This past weekend was the Big 4 Classic in Des Moines. We played three great teams - Iowa, Drake, and Iowa State. There was a solid effort all around with both our defense and offense, but also things to be improved on for the spring. Special congrats to sophomore GINA BROWN for a grand-slam against Iowa!!! Great job! Wed., Sept. 28, we played Upper Iowa University, and Thurs., Sept. 29, we competed against Kirkwood Community College. It was exciting to watch JAIME FISHER pitch against her twin sister, Nicole, in the game against Kirkwood. Talk about a sibling rivalry! Tonight the seniors on the team will be involved in the Purple vs. Gold World Series Draft. The Purple vs. Gold Inter-Squad World Series will start next Monday and finish on Wednesday. According to tradition, the losing team must partner up and buy the winners a steak dinner at Jack and Arnies Steak House! I am determined to get a free dinner out of the World Series this year... it's my last chance! I have to make it count! That's all for now! If anyone has any suggestions or ideas for an upcoming post, please feel free to email me at hutchesj@uni.edu. I look forward to hearing from you! Fans like you mean so much to our program!

Hey Everyone!
This past Sun., Sept. 18,our scrimmage against Iowa Central Community College was rained out. However, there is good news! The game has been rescheduled for Oct. 13, at home at 4 p.m. I'm glad we'll still be able to get the game in On Wed., Sept. 21, we competed in a 7-inning scrimmage against Ellsworth Community College. Our defense was strong and our bats came alive. Two home runs by Courtney Dunker, and one by Olivia Aten! Great job girls!
Meet a Coach!
COACH ASHLEY GILLAND
Favorite Fast Food Restaurant: Pita Pit
Favorite Color: Light Blue
Favorite Animal: Panda Bear
Favorite Television Show: The Office
Favorite Holiday: July 4th, because it's my birthday too! There's always good summer food, cookouts and lots of family.
If someone were to write a biography about you, what do you think the title should be? The title would say... "Just because I have brown eyes, doesn't mean I'm full of it."
What would I find in your refrigerator right now? You'd find yogurt, milk, cheese, lunch meat and strawberry jam. In my freezer you would find waffles and Edy's Fruit Bars. Those are my favorite.
Do you have any superstitions? I used to when I played. Driving to the ballpark I'd always have to listen to pump up music, and drink a Red Bull.
If you only had 6 months left to live, what would you do with the time? First I'd go to Hawaii with my family and spend my time there. During that time I'd write personal letters to all the people who have influenced my life. And then I'd go surfing.
What makes you angry? I get angry when people don't clean up after themselves or leave trash around. Also, I get angry when people only leave one square of toilet paper on the roll because they're waiting for someone else to change it. Also when people give up easily - just when it comes to anything.
What is your favorite quote? Treat others as you would want to be treated.
How did you get involved with UNI athletics? I wanted to get back into coaching and I felt UNI would be a great start for my young coaching career.
What is your favorite softball memory (when you played?) My first college home run when I played for Western Illinois. We were playing in a tournament at Winthrop University in South Carolina. I just remember I worked a lot on my hitting in the off-season. I hit a home run in our first tournament, it was pretty special.
What's the most rewarding part of being a coach? I love to see our athletes progress year to year, especially when the upperclassmen realize the importance of what we're trying to do with our program and take pride in that.
What hobbies do you have? I run. I golf. Not very good, but I enjoy it. I like to play card games, like Euchre. I like to shop for shoes and sunglasses primarily. That's my weakness.
How much has your mindset for the game of softball changed from athlete to coach? I think looking back I wish I had more of an understanding of the game then I had back then. As an athlete I think my confidence level would have been higher if I had that understanding and knowledge of the game.
How do you feel about this team and the upcoming season? First of all, I feel the leadership of the team is going to be a very important factor in our success. The new talent that has joined the team this year seems to be hardworking, which we love here at UNI. I think we're going to be great. We only lost three last year, and we have a lot of experienced players returning.
Who do you look up to, who is your motivator/role model? Definitely my sister. Growing up- she went to college, and that motivated me at a very young age. I was in 4th grade talking about what college I wanted to go to. She was always very organized, and helpful. She was always at my games, and was always my biggest fan.
What was your favorite class in school? I would probably have to say Humanities when we learned about the Greek mythology... that always interested me.
Who would you like to give a "shout out" to?
I'd like to give a shout out to Drake (the musical artist, not the school.) I like his lyrics and his messages in his music. It speaks to me.
A shout out to my old roommate Mark (he's a strength and conditioning coach at Mississippi State.) I love and miss ya!
A shout out to my good friend Kara, she taught me how to golf. She is one of the best people I have ever met and is always positive in everything she does.
Go Panthers!!!

Hello!
Sunday, Sept. 11, was our first inter-squad scrimmage! It was fun to have a little "friendly competition" with the teammates to put everything together we've been working on the past couple of weeks. It was nice to get a chance to play with some of our new players to kind of get a feel for things with them before we had our first fall ball game against DMACC. Thursday, Sept. 15 our team played DMACC at 4:00 p.m. As COACH JACOBS said at the end of the scrimmage... "The most impressive number is the one to the far right of the scoreboard." Zero errors was a great accomplishment, great job ladies! We were able to score quite a few runs because of our timely hitting. I feel like our team chemistry has really been there since day one of practice, and during our game today it really showed. We still have a lot to work on, but it's an exciting process and we're looking forward to getting better! I know that we'll be able to do great things as a team if we keep capitalizing on our potential and working hard. When runners were on, we found a way to bring them in. I don't remember everyone who got a hit or scored a runner, but I'd like to give a special shout out to my teammate HANNAH BORSCHEL for hitting a huge triple scoring two Panthers! Way to go! Also, happy 22nd birthday tomorrow!!!! You're getting so old!!
COACH VANDE HOEF has started something new this year called "Team Tuesday's." After practices every Tuesday, we meet behind the field to do a unique activity that encourages team unity and bonding. This week's activity focused on the word of the week- service- and brought us closer together by sharing some personal thoughts and feelings on what the word means to us in regards to our own personal lives, the team, and the recent anniversary of 9/11. Personally, I really look forward to and enjoy the new activities. Coach V does a great job! She's awesome!
For me, classes have been really tough this week. I can imagine it's the same for most of my teammates- knowing that the fourth and fifth weeks of school usually involve the first exams of classes. With all the new things we've been going over at practice along with long study hours- it has made for one of the more stressful weeks so far. Day in the life of a student athlete... I guess! The coaching staff and my teammates are very supportive, making the studying and tests much easier to get through. A special thanks to COACH GERDES for keeping me calm during a hectic week! Thanks coach! J
Our next game is this Sunday, Sept. 18 against Iowa Central Community College at our home Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex at 3:00 p.m. Thanks for all the amazing support we've had so far this fall season! We look forward to seeing everyone Sunday!!!
Go Panthers!!!

Happy Friday Panther Fans!
I can't believe this week has flown by so fast! Tues., Sept. 7 was our first official team practice! It was good to knock off some rust and get everyone back together to work on team defense. I'm excited to have our first 7-inning scrimmage this Sunday, it should really show us some things we need to work on and get better at. Fall games are just around the corner! Can't wait!

Favorite Part of UNI: I really like my professors because they help me to figure out my future goals.
If you had to lose one sense for your entire life (hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste,) what would it be and why? Smell, I can hardly even smell things right now. If I couldn't smell, I wouldn't have to deal with all the stinky things.
What is your major? Family Services, I want to be an athletic administrator at a university.
What are you scared of? Snakes! I can't even walk by them when they're in the tanks in science building. One time, a snake tried to attack me when I was mowing the lawn. I hate snakes.
How many siblings do you have? I have one brother who is older than I am. He really brings out my competitive side because we are constantly fighting to be the "best child." He's always that person I can talk to if I need someone.
Who is your celebrity crush? George Clooney
What is the toy you played most with as a child? My doll-house.
If you were a superhero and had one superpower, what would it be and why? I'd want to fly because I've always wanted to be able to get places faster.
Who are your parents and what do they do? My dad's name is Brian and he works for the Chief Technical Staff for the office of Consumer Advocate in Des Moines. My mom's name is Jane, and she's the Sales Analyst for GuideOne insurance in West Des Moines.
If you could meet one person, dead or alive... who would it be and why? The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills because they have great shoes!
What is the toughest class you've had at UNI? Principles of Micro-Economics
What are you looking forward to the most for the upcoming softball season? Seeing the team come together. I feel like this is a new team that meshes well with each other, and plays together well on the field.
Why do you love the game of softball? Because it's not something you can just pick up and do. It's something you have to work at. It takes patience, and determination.
Go Panthers!!!

Hello PANTHER FANS!!!
It has been an exciting first couple weeks of the new school year for the University of Northern Iowa Softball team!
As a senior veteran, I would like to formally welcome our five new players to UNI as well as into our program. Layne Grgurich, Julia Hunter, Melanie Carroll, Melissa Walls, and Aly Zembruski, I'm sure I can speak for the team in saying that we're excited to have you with us and that there is a reason you chose to be a part of our program. The expectations we have built upon and the traditions we have formed as a team are things we look forward to passing on as the year moves forward. We take pride in what we have accomplished and what we have worked for in previous years. However, with every new year comes a fresh start... and we're excited for what this season has in store with you girls on board.
On Sunday the 28th, we kicked off the year with a SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) event which was held in the UNI Dome. This event brings together all the different athletic teams to meet, mingle, eat and play games... all in one place! This year's game theme was Minute to Win It; (if you've seen the NBC show hosted by Guy Fieri, I'm sure you know what I am talking about. If not, I would suggest Googling it. J) SAAC members set up sixteen random challenges, all around the Dome at different tables. Each table featured a unique, silly game. Some examples of these games included:
1) Bounce a Ping-Pong ball the length of a table in an effort to get it to stick to a mayonnaise covered piece of bread. Sounds pretty easy, right? All the Ping Pong balls you want, 60 seconds to complete the task. Precision seemed to be the key element needed to succeed, and our team chose JAMIE FISHER based on her excellent precision and coordination from the pitching mound. Jamie quickly learned that a tiny Ping Pong ball is much harder to throw under control than her familiar softball, and struggled to prevail over the opposing... mayo-covered slice of bread. Best of luck next time Fish. We were all rooting for you.
2) Two teammates volley a wadded up piece of paper back and forth on wooden clipboards until they are able to get it to land in a plastic trashcan just a few yards away. Based on their agile cat-like nature and extraordinarily fast feet, our team chose MACKENZIE DAIGH and HALEY KRIENER to perform this difficult task. An assignment that seemed "easy" proved to be much more challenging than expected. Despite their best efforts, Kreiner and Daigh struggled to pull out the W.
3) Keep three balloons in the air for 60 seconds without letting them touch the ground. The team's unanimous vote of sophomore GINA BROWN showed to be an excellent choice. After a diving effort in the final few seconds of competition, Gina escaped with the win and was able to show off her trophy (a bloody knee) for the rest of the evening. Way to go Gina!!!
Even though we didn't win First Place at the SAAC Event, (Congrats UNI wrestling...) we sure had a blast. Good luck next year girls, I think we're past due to bring home the gold!
Monday the 29th marked our first official day of individual practices. Different times are set up by our coaches for everyone to go to the field, based on our class schedules. Monday, Wednesday's and Friday's are defense (infield, outfield, pitching and catching,) and Tuesday's and Thursday's are offense (hitting.) I can tell that a lot of my teammates have put in a ton of work over the summer to improve their strength, as well as their game. With the exception of a rainy Tuesday afternoon, it has been great outside workout weather.
Tuesday's and Thursday's are our teams weightlifting/conditioning days. Our strength coach Courtney Novotny must have thought that it would be fun for us to see a beautiful sunrise that morning... so she sent us outside for our workout. Sprinting up hills got the best of a few of us... and let me just say that there is no closer bond then that of a fellow teammate... yacking up breakfast in the next-door bathroom stall. I won't play captain call-out, but girls- you know who you are! I feel your pain! Sometimes, it's hard to think positively through a tough workout or difficult conditions. However, we need to remember that difficult workouts are just small stepping stones towards our overall goal for the year. These hard workouts are going to make us stronger, and ultimately get us into shape and to the place we want to be by the time our spring season starts. Keep it up girls!
A special thank you to COACH GERDES for the SAAC Event photos, as well as COACH JACOBS for some inspirational insight and ideas for the blog.
Go Panthers!!!
