The University of Northern Iowa (7-5, 5-1 WWC) heads to Ames, Iowa, Sunday to compete at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Regional. NATIONAL DUALS BRACKETS ANNOUNCED
UNI is competing in the Iowa State Regional Bracket of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. The winner of this six-team regional will qualify for the “Mat Mayhem Finals” with the champions of the other three regionals. The University of Iowa earned the No. 1 seed for the Iowa State Regional. Other schools to receive No. 1 seeds for their respective regionals incldue Cornell, Minnesota and Oklahoma State. All regionals will take place Sunday, Feb. 12.
BONIN SHARES WWC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK HONOR
David Bonin and Air Force’s Clayton Gable were named Co-Western Wrestling Conference Wrestlers of the Week Feb. 7.
Bonin went 3-0 the weekend of Feb. 3-5 as UNI took on Iowa State, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. His biggest victory, a 3-2 decision, came against No. 11 Steven Monk of NDSU. The match proved to be an important step in UNI’s 22-18 dual win over the Bison.
Bonin also defeated Iowa State’s Michael Moreno with a 2-0 decision in their Friday night bout with the Cyclones. He then capped off his weekend with a 4-1 decision over SDSU’s Nick Flynn. Bonin ended WWC dual competition with a perfect 6-0 record against conference opponents and is riding an eight-match win streak.
The conference award was Bonin’s first of the season and second of his career.
WEST GYM TO UNDERGO MAJOR RENOVATIONS
Before a sold out crowd at UNI’s Feb. 3 dual with Iowa State, the Panther wrestling team, Athletic Director Troy Dannen, and University President Ben Allen joined benefactor Sandy Stevens in announcing phase one of the West Gym renovation project. Stevens announced that the “Bill Koll Wrestling Room” will replace the current wrestling room as part of the project’s first phase. Koll was a three-time national champion at UNI.
After the new wrestling room is built, a new locker room and team lounge will be constructed to complete phase one for the four-phase project.
UNI and Virginia Tech have met just two times and both have been within the past ten seasons. The Panthers hold a 2-0 series lead with their most-recent victory coming in 2006 when UNI stomped the Hokies 37-7.
PAST NATIONAL DUALS PERFORMANCES
In the past ten seasons, UNI has compiled a record of 6-20 at the National Duals. Last season, the Panthers were 1-2 with losses to Missouri and Oklahoma State and a win over Ohio State.
SOLD OUT CROWD
A sold-out crowd of 2,200 witnessed the Feb. 3 dual between UNI and Iowa State at the West Gym. The last sell out prior to that match occurred last season as the Panthers took on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
CATS WRAP UP WWC REGULAR SEASON
UNI was the first team in the Western Wrestling Conference to finish their regular season conference schedule. The Panthers ended up with a 5-1 record, which guarantees them at least a second-place finish in the standings. No. 10 Wyoming remains in first place with an undefeated 3-0 record.
UNI TO HOST WEST REGIONAL
Panther wrestling will host the NCAA West Regional this season on Sun., March 4, at the McLeod Center. All seven WWC programs will have wrestlers competing at the tournament with the goal of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in St. Louis. COLON'S STREAK STAYS ALIVE
Redshirt sophomore Joe Colin is riding a 13-match win streak that dates back to Dec. 30. In those matches, Colon has compiled four falls, four technical falls, four major decisions, and just one regular decision. Also, in that time, he has climbed the rankings, starting unranked and is now No. 11 at 133 pounds.
LODER AMONG THE NATION'S BEST
UNI’s Ryan Loder (184), rated No. 6 in the latest InterMat rankings, has one of his weight class’ best records at 27-2. He is also the highest-rated underclassmen at 184. Loder has a record of 2-2 against fellow ranked opponents.
