Carbondale, Ill.- The University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team finished the first day of the MVC Championships in fifth place with 87 points. Junior Bethany Olson was the top finisher of the day for the Panthers.
Olson placed fourth in the 1-meter dive with 249.25 points. Teammate Morgan Kinney finished with 197.75 points to put her in 14th place in the event.
Chelsea Hartman took 11th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:03.53, a new season best time for her. Reva Bork (5:12. 08), Becca Ortmann (5:17.71), Ashley Nelson (5:19.32), Allison Hobbs (5:14.63), and Jody Peterson (5:19.80) took 14th- 18th respectively in the 500 free.
Caryn Knight finished 19th in the 200 IM, clocking in at a time of 2:10.84. She was the lone finalist for the Panthers in this event.
Kenzie Smith finished 16th in the 50 free with a time of 24.92. Fellow Panther Elise Drewsen took 19th in the same event with a time of 25.17.
The 200 freestyle relay clocked in at 1:37.54 and finished in fifth place. The team consisted of Kenzie Smith, Lindsey Phelps, Jamie Pearson and Elise Drewsen. The 400 medley relay also placed fifth with a time of 3:55.58. Caryn Knight and Kenzie Smith led this relay for the Panthers.
Day two of the MVC Championships will begin with preliminaries at 11:00 a.m. in Carbondale, Illinois.
