Doug Humphrey has been selected as the University of Northern Iowa's new head swimming and diving coach, as announced by UNI Director of Athletics Troy Dannen.

"Doug brings a tremendous set of assets to our swimming and diving team," Dannen said. "His accomplishments as a student, student-athlete, coach, recruiter and mentor demonstrate the experience UNI swimming and diving needs to elevate our program. We welcome Doug, his wife Dani, and the Humphrey family to the Panther family."

Humphrey has served as the assistant swim coach at the University of Nebraska since 2000 under Olympic gold medalist Pablo Morales. Humphrey swam for the Huskers from 1991-1996 and also served as a graduate assistant coach for the Huskers from 1997-2000.

"Recruiting and coaching top-level students to the best of their abilities is of my highest focus," Humphrey said. "I not only coach swimmers to be better in the water, but hold each student-athlete to the highest standards. I will bring UNI great pride, honor and championships."

While at Nebraska, Humphrey served the primary coach for sprinters, distance, mid-distance freestylers, IMers and stroke specialists. For the Huskers, he was in charge of a wide-ranging array of responsibilities and skills including recruiting coordinator, dry-land conditioning coordinator, motivational and mental imagery coordinator, team management, meet manager and director, travel coordinator, academic monitor and assistant camp director.

As a swimmer for the Cornhuskers, Humphrey captured two Big Eight individual titles in 1992, winning the 200 freestyle (1:39.14) and 500-yard freestyle (4:27.44) events. With the help of Humphrey's two individual titles, the Huskers captured the Big Eight team title in 1992.

Humphrey also helped the Huskers to back-to-back Big Eight titles in 1993 and 1994. In 1992 he anchored the 800-yard freestyle relay team that set a then-Big Eight and Devaney Center record of 6:36.59.

Humphrey remains fourth on the Huskers' all-time list in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:27.44.

Humphrey holds two bachelor's degrees in education that he earned in 1997, and earned his master's degree in instructional technology in 1999. He is currently working toward a doctorate in higher education administration.

Humphrey served as a coach with Nebraska Aquatics, a club swimming program in Lincoln, from 1996 until 2002. While at the helm of Nebraska Aquatics, Humphrey coached swimmers in various age groups to all levels of success, sending many swimmers to regional and national competitions.

A 1991 graduate of Omaha Westside, Humphrey was voted Swimmer of the Meet at the spring 1991 Junior National Championships, capturing two gold and two silver medals.

He and his wife, Danielle, have a three children, Ava (5), Noah (2), and newborn Gabrielle.
