AUSTIN, Texas - University of Northern Iowa senior Olimpia Nowak advanced to the quarterfinals in the 100m hurdles at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds on Friday evening, earning the 20th of 27 qualifying spots with a time of 13.51 seconds. Nowak's wind-aided time bettered her school-record performance of 13.58 seconds from earlier this season.
Nowak will compete in the quarterfinals of the 100m hurdles at 7:20 p.m. Saturday evening. The top 12 athletes will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships being held in Des Moines on June 6-9.
In the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles, Nowak finished under one minute for the third time this season at 59.80 seconds, but placed 23rd and did not advance to the national semifinals.
Senior Aaron Stockstell concluded his UNI career in the quarterfinals of the 800m, failing to advance to the national semifinals in Des Moines. Stockstell finished in 1:52.20 for 22nd place on Friday evening.
School record-holder Jenna Wexter cleared 12-10.25 (3.92m) - the second-best outdoor jump in UNI history - to tie for 20th place in the pole vault.
Freshman Sebastian Barth recorded a season-best time of 14.17 seconds in the 110m hurdles, but missed out on advancing to the quarterfinals by two hundredths of a second. Barth finished in 29th place overall after entering the meet ranked 34th in the West Region.
Senior Tanner Hurt placed 27th in the hammer throw with a mark of 190-10 (58.18m). Adam McDonnell threw 184-06 (56.25m) for 40th place.
The NCAA West Preliminary Rounds will conclude on Saturday. UNI will be represented by Jordan Williams (discus), Sam Kranz and Daniel Gooris (pole vault), Traci Harms (hammer throw), Olimpia Nowak (100m hurdles quarterfinal) and the men's 4x100m relay team.
