PEORIA, Illinois- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team was defeated by the Arkansas State Red Wolves 3-1 in the second match of the CEFCU Classic in Peoria, Illinois, Saturday afternoon. Later that day, UNI defeated Long Beach State 3-1 in the last match of the CEFCU Classic. Candice Burke was named tournament MVP and Megan Lehman was an all-tournament honoree.
In the Arkansas State match, Macy Ubben led with 14 kills, a career high for her, and Megan Lehman followed with 13 kills. Molly Turk notched 43 assists and Candice Burke recorded 22 digs.
UNI fell early on in the first set. The score was tied 3-3 and Arkansas State took advantage of a UNI error to take the lead at 4-3, and they held the lead for the rest of the set, winning 25-22.
In the second set, UNI was down 10-4 early on. Kills by Amy Braun, Shelby Kintzel and Ubben helped the Panthers go on a 8-2 to tie it up at 12-12. They then went on a 9-0 run to make it 21-12. UNI cruised through the rest of the set and won it 25-15.
The third set as back and forth in the beginning. With the score tied at 9-9, Arkansas State went on a 4-0 run to take the lead at 13-9. The Red Wolves held the lead the rest of the set and won it 25-19.
UNI jumped out to an early 9-5 lead in the fourth set. Arkansas State slowly started coming back and tied it up at 10-10. The teams went back and forth until the score was tied at 19-19. Arkansas State got a kill in the next play to make it 20-19. They continued their run and won the set 25-21, to win the match 3-1.
In the Long Beach State match, Lehman led with 16 kills. Turk recorded 41 assists and Burke had a career high 35 digs.
UNI had the 12-6 lead at the first timeout of the set. The Panthers kept up this pace through the rest of the set and won it 25-18.
With the score tied at 11-11 in the second set, Arkansas State went on a 3-0 run to give them the 14-11 lead. The Panthers answered with their own 3-0 run to tie up back up at 14-14. UNI maintained the lead the rest of the set to win it 25-22.
The third set was back and forth in the beginning for the teams. The last tied score of the set came at 14-14. Arkansas State went on a 5-0 run to make it 19-15, and they continued this through the set. The Red Wolves won the set 25-21.
The score was tied 9-9 in the fourth set when a kill by Shelby Kintzel gave UNI the 10-9 lead. The Panthers cruised through the rest of the set. They won the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
The Panthers will continue MVC play when they take on Illinois State on the road on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
