The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team was led by its No. 1 doubles team of Phoebe Walker and Krissy Lankelma on day one of the 2012 Kansas Fall Invite in Lawrence, Kan.
"Overall it was good day and I would say it was our best Friday so far this fall," head coach Mariana Cobra said. "In the past few tournaments, we had been playing better on the weekend. It was good to see us come out strong today and play well and win some matches."
The Panthers' doubles duo posted two wins and advanced to the semifinals to take on the top-seeded Kansas squad (Claire Dreyer/Anastasia Trubich) on Saturday. Walker and Lankelma scored an opening round win over Kansas State's Ana Gomez and Miranda Erisman, 8-6. Walker and Lankelma then tallied an 8-2 win over UMKC's Maddie Schulte and Eva Dalvia.
Walker was the lone Panther singles player to advance in the winner's bracket with a double-bagel of Drake's Lea Kozulic, 6-0, 6-0.
Play is expected to wrap up on Saturday with both the singles and doubles play being completed.
