University of Northern Iowa redshirt freshman quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen (Jenks, Okla./Jenks HS) is one of 20 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award.
The Jerry Rice Award is given to the FCS's top freshman in the nation. The Rice Award, in its second year, is named for legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice, who was a two-time first-team All-American in the FCS (then Division I-AA) at Mississippi Valley State. The award will be voted on by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries this week, and presented at the FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation on Dec. 17 in Philadelphia.
Kollmorgen led the Missouri Valley Football Conference in touchdown passes (21) and passing efficiency (141.88 rating). Kollmorgen completed 185-of-313 passing for 2,460 yards this season.
Kollmorgen tallied four games with three touchdown passes, including his collegiate debut at Wisconsin where he threw for 265 yards against the Big Ten's Badgers. He threw for a season-high 333 yards and three scores at Youngstown State.
Kollmorgen was also a two-time MVFC Newcomer of the Week honoree this season.
