CEDAR FALLS, Iowa  - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell to South Dakota State 61-49 Saturday in a physical battle between the two teams.

Jacqui Kalin led the team in scoring with 21 points, marking her third game this season scoring 20 or more points. Amber Kirschbaum led the team in rebounds for the fourth game in a row with nine.

After two strong defensive stops from the Panthers, Brittni Donaldson hit UNI's first field goal of the game with 17:16 left in the first half. UNI and SDSU were even in the paint both with four points leading up to the first media timeout, making the score 7-5 in favor of the Jackrabbits.

A big three-pointer for Kalin put the Panthers in the lead 8-7 with 15:17 left in the half. The Jackrabbits were able to convert the score to 12-9 in their favor, and that scored remained after several defensive stops by both teams all the way to the 10:38 mark.

Jess McDowell stopped the scoring drought in the game when she knocked down a three-pointer with 7:28 left on the clock to make the score 13-12. The Panthers then forced SDSU to their seventh turnover of the game to regain possession heading into a timeout.

McDowell's three-pointer sparked a 7-0 run by UNI, which was helped by a strong defensive presence by the Panthers. Hannah Schonhardt and Kalin both hit two free throws a piece to make the score 16-12 in favor of UNI.

Kalin hit another three-pointer to give the Panthers their biggest lead of the first half with 4:27 left, making the score 20-14. Kalin's three-pointer kept the run alive for UNI, making it a 12-2 run that edged 9:31 off the clock.

SDSU went on a 7-0 run to cut the score to 22-20, but Kalin put a damper in their run with her third three-pointer of the game giving the Panthers a 25-21 lead with less than a minute left in the half. Keitel hit the final field goal of the half off a pass from Sharnae Lamar to give the Panthers the 27-21 lead heading into halftime.

UNI kept a four point lead of 33-29 heading into the first media timeout of the second half. Kalin opened the half with a layup and Kirschbaum added a turnaround jumper to the Panthers' stats.

SDSU went on a 10-0 run knocking 1:54 off the clock and making the score 36-33. Kalin stopped the run again when she sliced through the defense for a quick lay-up to cut the SDSU lead to two points with 13:06 left in the game.

Kalin gave the Panthers the lead of 37-36 just seconds later off a jump-shot and then stole the ball on the next possession to put the ball back in UNI hands. After a Jackrabbit three-pointer, Keitel tied up the score 39-39 off a layup with 11:30 left.

UNI tied the score again with 10:05 left when Donaldson hit a layup to make the score 43-43. The Jackrabbits tied the score 45-45 on the very next play, but Donaldson was at it again when she answered with another layup.

SDSU grabbed their largest lead of the game of four points with 7:14 left in the game off a three-pointer, making the score 51-47. Kalin cut the SDSU lead to two points when she dribbled through the Jackrabbit defense for a turnaround jumper to make the score 49-51.

SDSU was able to convert a three-pointer and a layup to make the score 56-49 with 2:40 left in the game. The Panthers were unable to close the gap and eventually fell from a 10-0 run by SDSU, 61-49.
