BROOKINGS, S.D. - Two University of Northern Iowa wrestlers earned bonus points in their debut matches to help the No. 20 Panthers beat South Dakota State, 41-3.

The Jackrabbits were able to take the first match at 125 pounds, but the Panthers dominated the dual from there, recording three pins, one tech fall and three major decisions.

"It's tough for a team after they see so many teammates going down," said head coach Doug Schwab. "As a team, there were some positions we were forcing. We are getting to the point in the season that we have to get stingy. We have to keep up our level."

Clay Welter and Taylor Kettman stepped into the dual lineup for the Panthers for the first time this year. Welter, at 149 pounds, got the fastest pin of the night, sticking Tyler Johnson in 1 minute, 1 second.

Kettman got a major decision over Joe Skow, winning 10-1, in the 197-pound weight class.

"They both responded really well," said Schwab. "Taylor has been working his way into the lineup. We wanted to get him out there to see where he was at."

Ryan Loder, 184 pounds, remains undefeated in dual competition with his technical fall win over Shea Nolan, 17-1.

"Loder looked good. Anytime you can put that many points on the board, you're helping the team," said Schwab.

Jarrett Jensen, 165 pounds, was back at home wrestling in front of his friends and family as a Panther.

"It was a great win for Jarrett," said Schwab. "It was good for him to win another tight one. He has been on the other side of those. It was good to see him turn it around, and he had a lot of fans on hand."

The Panthers are facing a second former Western Wrestling Conference foe this weekend. The team travels to North Dakota State Sunday.

"All our guys scored a bunch of points," said Schwab. "We just need to remain sharp Sunday."

SDSU and NDSU remain in the Western Wrestling Conference, but UNI has moved to the Mid-American Conference for the conference meet this year and begin wrestling a full MAC schedule starting next year.

Last year, UNI took a distant second to NDSU's third in the WWC meet, while SDSU finished last in the conference.

This makes the 36th time that UNI has beaten South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits have only defeated the Panthers three times.

UNI is ranked third in the MAC and has six wrestlers ranked in the top four among their conference peers:

  • 133 - Levi Wolfensperger 3rd
  • 141 - Joey Lazor 2nd
  • 149 - Bart Reiter 4th
  • 157 - David Bonin 1st
  • 174 - Cody Caldwell 4th
  • 184 - Ryan Loder 2nd

Amateur Wrestling News rankings:

  • 133 - Levi Wolfensperger 9th
  • 141 - Joey Lazor 13th
  • 174 - Cody Caldwell 19th
  • 184 - Ryan Loder 8th

Intermat rankings has the team at 26th:

  • 133 - Levi Wolfensperger 12th
  • 141 - Joey Lazor 15th
  • 184 - Ryan Loder 6th

Some Panther wrestlers will head to Dubuque, Iowa, Feb. 2 for the Duhawk Open.

NDSU's win at No. 14 Wyoming on Jan. 27 was its third dual victory over a ranked opponent this season, and was only Wyoming's second loss in its last 26 WWC duals.

Other wins over ranked opponents this season: 24-15 over No. 24 Boise State on Nov. 16; 27-15 over No. 25 Old Dominion on Jan. 12.

Sunday marks the eighth dual this season against a ranked opponent for NDSU (7-7).

Sprenkle, Monk and Stoll are all returning NCAA qualifiers. Sprenkle and Monk came up one win short of All-American honors in 2012.
