UNI Names January Student-Athletes of the Month

The University of Northern Iowa athletic department has honored four Panthers as the Student-Athletes of the Month for January.

Jacqui Kalin (Sioux City, Iowa/North HS), Maddie Beeler (Peru, Iowa/Interstate 35 HS), Marc Sonnen (St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) and Ryan Loder (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) were selected as the student-athletes of the month by the UNI Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Jacqui Kalin - Women's Basketball
In eight games, Kalin averaged 19.0 points per game. Kalin also led the team in rebounding (51) and tied for the team lead in steals (6). Kalin shot 38-of-39 at the free throw line for a 97.4 percent for the month of January. She scored 20 or more points in six of the Panthers' eight games this month. Kalin notched her first career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds vs. Drake on Jan. 27.

Maddie Beeler - Women's Track & Field
Beeler captured a pair of first-place finishes in the 400m at the Wisconsin Elite Invite and the Jack Jennett Invite. She posted a time of 58.65 in Wisconsin. Beeler bettered her time at the Jennett meet with a clocking of 57.39.

Marc Sonnen - Men's Basketball
Sonnen shot 61.5 percent (24-of-39) from 3-point land in the month of January. Overall, Sonnen shot 55.4 percent from the field in the month. Sonnen currently ranks No. 3 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage. Sonnen tied a career-high with 21 points in an 84-53 win over Bradley (Jan. 12). Sonnen averaged 10.2 points per game and made all six free throw attempts in the month of January.

Ryan Loder - Wrestling
Loder (184 lbs.) posted a perfect dual mark of 7-0 in the month of January. Loder tallied two pins, a technical fall and two major decisions in the month. He closed out the month with a 3-0 win over No. 8-ranked Mike Larson (Missouri).
