TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Northern Iowa softball team opened up day one action of the Arizona State Little Wood Classic this afternoon taking on the Flames of University of Illinois-Chicago. The Panthers (3-3) coming off a pair of losses on Sunday afternoon in the UNI-Dome Classic, were quick to bounce back scoring on the Flames and cruised to an 8-0 shutout.
UNI showed plenty of firepower early on at the plate in the second inning getting four runs across. Freshman Kristin Lock and sophomore Aly Zembruski got the bats going each with a single, both went on to score. Seniors Samantha Reimer and Haley Kriener kept the bats alive each getting on base with a walk and a single, both would eventually score as the inning came to an end.
On the defensive side of the plate the Panthers sent freshmen Ellie Doughty to the circle to improve on her (1-0) season mark. Doughty picked up right where she left off following her 1-0 win over University Wisconsin-Green Bay keeping the Flames bats quiet. Doughty tossed a complete game shutout and allowed just five hits, one walk, and struck out one.
UNI improves to the .500 mark on the season with the win at 3-3.
