The University of Northern Iowa softball team wrapped up the final day of the Arizona State Little Wood Classic with a 1-0 setback to the Michigan State Spartans.
Coming off a pair of losses to Minnesota on Saturday, the Panthers (3-7 overall) looked to bounce back against the Spartans sending junior pitcher Jamie Fisher to the circle looking to improve on her season mark of 1-4. Coming off a double-digit strikeout performance on Saturday night against the Gophers, Fisher got off to a slow start. She allowed a hit to the left side for a single but quickly picked up where she left off striking out her next five batters.
At the plate, the Panthers got off to a fast start loading the bases in the top of the first with no outs but were not able to produce a run. Unable to find a rhythm at the plate UNI struggled to collect hits off of Spartan pitcher Kelly Smith connecting for three hits in the game. Sophomore second baseman Julia Hunter led the Panthers at the plate going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in the first and fifth innings.
Fisher tossed a complete game and gave up six hits, one run, and struck out seven Spartans. Fisher was the hard-luck loser and fell to 1-5 on the year.
UNI will take the field next weekend in Conway, Ark., taking part in the Woo Pig Classic. UNI will face the likes of Arkansas, Wright State, and Jacksonville State as well as a pair of seeded games.
