KENT, Ohio - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team avenged a loss earlier in the season to No. 18 Wisconsin at the NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals, winning 24-15, and Ryan Loder remains undefeated in dual competition.

The Badgers won the last meeting with the Panthers on Nov. 24. Wisconsin beat UNI 24-13.

Wisconsin became the third ranked team to fall to No. 24 UNI this season. The Panthers, unranked at the time, knocked off then-ranked No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 21 Northwestern in January.

"We turned things around from earlier in the season," said head coach Doug Schwab. "I think it could have been more lopsided. Overall, we performed well."

The win advanced UNI and pitted the team against top-ranked Oklahoma State, which ended the Panthers' run for a national dual title.

There were four regional competitions on Feb. 17. The winners of the four regions advanced to the championships set for Feb. 22-23 at the University of Minnesota. Oklahoma State, the winner of regional competition at Kent, Ohio, also will join No. 8 Illinois, No. 2 Iowa, No. 4 Minnesota and No. 5 Ohio State that received automatic bids to the final.

Three Panthers earned bonus points for the team with their major decision wins. Senior Ryan Jauch, 125 pounds, won 11-3 over Matthew Cavallaris. Joey Lazor followed suit at 141 pounds, beating Thomas Kelliher 10-2.

"Joey Lazor is doing a great job," said Schwab. "He has a good roll going. He has a lot of confidence when he steps out there. We want a lot of guys to feel like he does. It's important to build your lead, and he is doing that each time out."

The momentum continued for UNI when Wisconsin forfeited the 149-pound match to Bart Reiter. David Bonin got his eighth major decision win on the season by beating Charles York, 14-1.

The 165-pound match looked like a repeat from the first time UNI faced Wisconsin. UNI's Jarrett Jensen beat Frank Cousins 8-1, which was the same score when the wrestlers competed in November.

Ryan Loder won the Panthers' sixth match. He beat Benjamin Cox by decision, 8-2.

Oklahoma State (15-0) continues to be undefeated with its win over UNI.

"It was a lopsided score," said Schwab. "We are going to be heading into nationals soon, so we need to get over the rankings. We will be facing a lot of ranked wrestlers. We can't let our guys concede anything. We have to make our competitors earn everything. We could do a better job of ignoring those rankings."

OSU has eight nationally ranked wrestlers in the top 15. Joey Lazor and Loder were the only two Panthers to win their matches.

Loder, ranked eighth, beat No. 12 Chris Chiohuma, 6-1.

"Ryan Loder just has to keep opening up his offense," Schwab said. "He had a great chance in his Oklahoma State match. He rode the OSU guy for nearly the entire second period. It's great that he was able to be undefeated in dual tournaments leading up to the conference championships."

The Panthers (9-5) will head to the Mid-American Conference Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., March 10. The NCAA national championships are set in Des Moines, Iowa, for March 21-23.
