CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team saw its six-game win streak snapped on Saturday as the Denver Pioneers recorded a 63-57 victory in the McLeod Center. The game was a part of the RAMADA Worldwide BracketBusters event.
UNI (17-12 overall) led 16-2 just 4:38 into the game. The Panthers buried their first three 3-point shots of the game. But Denver (18-8 overall) took control of the first half with a 26-5 run that gave the Pioneers a 28-21 lead with 3:29 left in the half.
Denver eventually led 32-25 at the break.
UNI played catchup the entire second half and pulled to within one point at 53-52 with 2:25 left in the game on a Deon Mitchell layup.
Denver pushed the lead back to five at 57-52, but a Marc Sonnen triple pulled UNI back to within two at 57-55 with 1:25 left.
The Panthers got the ball back and had a chance to tie or lead, but Sonnen's three-pointer from the right corner missed. UNI head coach Ben Jacobson was given a technical foul by referee Jimmy Casas with 35 seconds left. Denver's Brett Olson sank both free throws and then made two more after he was fouled on the Pioneers' possession.
UNI will travel to Southern Illinois on Wednesday. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Carbondale, Ill.
NOTES: UNI is 0-9 when trailing at the half ... UNI outrebounded Denver, 29-20 ... Seth Tuttle scored a game-high 18 points.
