The University of Northern Iowa softball team got a one-hit shutout from junior pitcher Jamie Fisher and scored a 6-0 win over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at the Central Arkansas Invitational.
Fisher gave up a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh to break up her no-hit bid. Fisher struck out seven in earning her second win of the season.
At the plate, the Panthers were quiet going hitless through the first three innings before the bats erupted in the top of the fourth. Caitlin Wnek and Kristin Lock got things going with a pair of singles. With two outs, Samantha Olson connected on a double down the left field line advancing Wnek and Lock. Abbie VanVleet came through on an RBI single allowing Olson to score and giving UNI a 3-0 lead.
In control of the game defensively, the Panthers continued to find success on the offensive side of the plate plating a pair of runs in the seventh from Melissa Walls and newcomer Jordyn Brunssen. The pair of runs gave UNI a 6-0 lead.
With the win UNI finished 2-3 at the Central Arkansas Invitational and improved to a 5-10 season mark. The Panthers will take the field again next weekend taking part in the Woo Pig Classic held in Fayetteville, Ark.. UNI will face the likes of Jacksonville State, Arkansas, and Wright State as well as a pair of seeded games.
