WBB Completes Road Sweep With Win Over SIU, 74-60

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team defeated the Southern Illinois Salukis 74-60 for their first road sweep of the season with junior Jess McDowell leading the way with 22 points.

The Panthers finished with four players in double figures. Along with McDowell, Jacqui Kalin chipped in 15 points while Hannah Schonhardt finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Jen Keitel added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Southern Illinois took an early 4-0 lead, but Schonhardt notched the Panthers first field goal with 17:47 on the clock in the first half to make the score 4-2. UNI went into the first media timeout down four points with 15:56 left in the first half, with Schonhardt scoring the Panthers first four points to make the score 8-4.

UNI went on a 10-2 run with McDowell knocking down two three-pointers to make the score 16-13 in the Panthers' favor with 12:42 left in the half. SIU's Cartaesha Macklin was able to convert on a quick layup to end the UNI run, to make the score 16-15 heading into a timeout with 11:41 on the clock.

After the Salukis took the lead off a jump-shot from Rishonda Napier, McDowell hit her fourth three-pointer of the game to notch her second double-figure game this weekend and make the score 30-27 in UNI's favor. UNI finished the first half with a four point lead with two clutch free throws from Kalin and a late layup from the senior to make the score 36-32.

Kirschbaum opened the second half, scoring the Panthers' first three points, making the score 39-36 with 15:57 left in the game. UNI extended their lead to 44-39 after Jen Keitel snuck behind the SIU defense for an easy layup. McDowell nailed her fifth three-pointer of the game with less than 12 minutes to play, making the score 47-41.

The physical battle between SIU and UNI continued with UNI holding a 57-52 lead with 7:15 remaining in the game. SIU's Jordyn Courier hit a three-pointer to cut the UNI lead to three points, but Kalin went hard to the basket on the next play to keep the Panther lead at five points.

Schonhardt came up with a big offensive rebound, going hard to the glass for a layup to make the score 62-54 with less than five minutes left in the game. The Salukis were unable to close the gap and the Panthers won in double-digits, defeating SIU 74-60.

Post-Game Notes vs. Southern Illinois
Jess McDowell
finished the weekend against Evansville and Southern Illinois with 13 three-pointers. She knocked down six treys against the Salukis today. She also has reached the 20-plus mark twice this weekend with her 22 points against SIU.
Hannah Schonhardt has now scored in double figures in four out of the last six games. She finished with 15 points against Southern Illinois, adding a career high 11 rebounds and a career high three steals.
Jacqui Kalin
is now third all-time at UNI in points scored in a season with 540 after her 15 points against Southern Illinois.
Jacqui Kalin has moved up to third all-time at UNI in free throws made with 140 after her eight free throws against Southern Illinois.
