NORMAL, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team capped a three-game series with the Illinois State Redbirds with a 9-3 win on Sunday afternoon.
UNI (22-24, 12-8 MVC) came out swinging with plenty of firepower throughout the duration of the game. The Panthers generated nine runs off 12 hits vs. the Redbirds.
Gina Brown was the first to get the Panthers on the on the board scoring in the second inning. Brown reached base after connecting for a single to the left side before Kristin Lock followed up with a two-run homer to left-center giving UNI an early advantage, 2-0.
UNI went on to score in five consecutive innings which lasted from the second to the sixth innings and featured nine runs on nine hits. Lock led the Panthers offensive attack going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a homer.
Abbie VanVleet started the game for the Panthers and got the win. VanVleet (3-6) tossed a complete game six-hitter.
UNI will take the field again Tue., Apr. 30 facing off with the Bradley University Braves at 3 p.m. in Peoria, Ill.
