Women's Tennis Adds Eight For 2013-14 Roster

University of Northern Iowa women’s tennis coach Mariana Cobra announced the signing of eight student-athletes for the 2013-14 season.

Kylie Haviland (San Diego, Calif./Del Norte HS), Jordyn Kearney (Irvine, Calif./Mater Dei HS), Elvira Lopez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cardenal Xavierre HS), Erica Medlin (Phoenix, Ariz./Mesquite HS), Savanna Petersen (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS), Astrid Araya Santos (San Salvador, El Salvador), Jieke Stroobant (Torhout, Belgium) and Sydney Wolfe (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial HS) will be joining the Panther women’s tennis team next season.

Haviland was a three-time all-conference performer at Del Norte High School in San Diego, Calif., for head coach Cherise Meoli. Haviland served as team captain and was selected as her teams’ MVP all four years of his prep career. She was undefeated in her conference during all four years. Haviland was a scholar-athlete as well. She is the daughter of Sue and Kraig Haviland.

Kearney was a two-year team MVP at Mater Dei High School in Irvine, Calif. Kearney was ranked in the top 100 players of the USTA’s Southern California region. She is a four-year varsity letterwinner and won the Trinity League doubles crown in 2009. She earned the teams’ Coaches Award in 2012 and served as team captain in 2013. She is the daughter of Kevin and Stacy Kearney.

Lopez was ranked as high as No. 66 in singles in Spain. She helped her club team get assigned to the Sub-14 National Championship for the first time in her club’s history. Lopez graduated from Cardenal Xavierre High School in May. She is the daughter of Elvira and Miguel-Angel Lopez.

Medlin finished third in the state of Arizona her senior year at Mesquite High School. Medlin placed fourth in the state as a junior. Medlin was named her team’s MVP all four years as a prep athlete. She served as team captain for three years. Medlin was an all-WAC doubles selection as both a freshman as and as a sophomore. Medlin was a member of three squads that qualified for the team state competition in tennis. She is the daughter of Rod and Monica Medlin.

Petersen was a two-time all-conference performer at Prior Lake High School in Prior Lake, Minn., for head coach Kris Schneider. Petersen served as team captain in 2012. She helped her prep squad set the school record for dual wins in a season (19) in 2012. She was a member of the third place finishing team in the 2012 Class AA state tournament. Petersen is a member of the National Business Honor Society and is an honor roll student. She is the daughter of Mitch and Stacey Petersen.

Araya Santos is a top-10 singles player in El Salvador. She chose UNI because “it will offer me good academic opportunities and a chance to become a better athlete. She is the daughter of Dita Jackelyn Santos Umanzor.

Stroobant is among the top-80 singles players in the Belgian rankings. She reached the doubles final of the Belgian championships. Stroobant chose UNI because it is a “beautiful University that is full of opportunities and has a good tennis team.” She is the daughter of Raf Stroobant and Dorine Jaques.

Wolfe was a four-time state qualifier in the state of Wisconsin at Memorial High School in Eau Claire, Wis. Wolfe was a two-time second-team all-state pick. She was a four-time all-conference honoree. She was named her team’s MVP in 2011 and 2012, while serving as team captain. She is a member of National Honor Society, Rotary Club and the SOAR Club. She is the daughter of Eric and Diane Wolfe.
