CHARLOTTE, N. C. – Senior wide receiver and kickoff specialist Wes Smith and junior running back David Johnson have been honored by the College Football Performance Awards by being named to two watch lists, it was announced today by the CFPA.
Johnson has been added to the 2013 CFPA All-Purpose Performer of the Year Award Watch List while Smith has landed on the CFPA Kickoff Returner Award Watch List. Johnson is one of 32 returning all-purpose performers returning to the field this season, vying for the top individual spot in the FCS with Smith being one of 34 athletes looking to win their respective award.
Johnson led the team in scoring last season with 108 points off of 18 touchdowns, finishing 2012 leading the MVFC in scoring. After being tied for fifth in the FCS in scoring at the end of the 2012 season, Johnson is now 10th all-time at UNI in career touchdowns with 30 and ninth all-time at UNI in rushing touchdowns with 22.
Johnson finished second on the team in all-purpose yards last season behind senior Carlos Anderson. He notched 1,404 all-purpose yards, including 1,021 on the ground and 383 in the air. He averaged 127.6 all-purpose yards per game in 2012 and now has 2,648 career all-purpose yards.
In his first season as a Panther, Smith shined on kickoff and punt returns for UNI racking up 163 kickoff return yards off of six attempts. He averaged 27.2 yards per return, including a long of 43 yards against Southern Illinois.
Smith, Johnson and the Panthers will kick off the season on Aug. 31 when they travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Big 12 opponent Iowa State. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
