CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa cross country program will return to action this Friday, Sept. 13, when they travel to Normal, Ill. to compete at the Redbird Invite.
The meet will take place at the Weibring Golf Course with the women’s 5k race starting at 5 p.m. and the men’s 8k race following at 5:45 p.m.
UNI is coming off a week of practice after competing at the Bulldog Classic on Aug. 31 to start their season. The Panthers had two men and two women finish in the top-10 in their respective races.
Newcomer Trai Bunch led the Panther men, coming in third place overall with a time of 10:56.16. Junior Terry Nielsen came across the finish line second for UNI and in 10th place overall, notching a time of 11:05.37.
Junior Alex Wilson led the women’s side, crossing the line first for the Panthers and second overall in the race with a time of 12:59.00, followed closely by freshman Theresa Connelly, who debuted as a Panther in third place overall with a time of 13:02.00.
Zach Buchheit and Andrew Swanson will both be making their first appearances this season at the Redbird Invite on Friday, hoping to capitalize on a strong 2012 performance.
Buchheit competed as a true freshman during the 2012 season and finished last year by placing in the top-10 in the 5,000 meters at the USA Junior Nationals. Swanson will represent one of two seniors on the men’s squad this year after finishing last season as one of UNI’s top runners.
