CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team defeated Green Bay 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in the McLeod Center. This is the first of two matches that these teams will play against each other today.
Macy Ubben led the Panthers with 13 kills, and Courtney Kintzel had a .364 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell tallied 46 assists, and Amie Held notched 19 digs for the Panthers.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 9-5 lead at the first timeout of the first set. Green Bay slowly brought it back to within two at 15-13, UNI. A kill by Eryca Hingtgen in the next play helped the Panthers regain the moment and increase their lead to 16-13. UNI held the lead the rest of the set and won it 25-19.
UNI took early control of the second set. They had the 11-6 lead at the first timeout of the set. Green Bay brought the set back to within four at 17-11, but this was the closest the Phoenix got to the Panthers. UNI cruised through the rest of the set and won it 25-16 to take the 2-0 match lead.
Green Bay turned the tables in the third set and took the early 10-6 lead. Kills by Hingtgen, Shelby Kintzel and Leigh Pudwill helped the Panthers fight back and tie the set at 15-15. A kill by Green Bay in the next play gave them the 16-15 lead, but UNI answered with a kill by Caldwell to tie it up again at 16-16. Green Bay then went on a 4-0 run to take the 20-16. The Phoenix held the lead and won the set 25-19.
With the fourth set tied at 13-13, an attack error by Green Bay gave the Panthers the 14-13 lead. The Phoenix answered with a kill in the next play to tie it again at 14-14. UNI then went on a 6-2 run to take the lead at 20-16. The Panthers held on and won the set 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
The Panthers will play Green Bay again tonight at 6 in the McLeod Center.
