DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa cross country program wrapped up competition at the MVC Championships today in Des Moines, Iowa.
The men placed fifth overall with Zach Buchheit placing 20th overall and finishing first for the Panther men. The sophomore came in with a time of 25:16.50, followed by Calvin Kibby who placed 22nd overall with a time of 25:21.80.
Trai Bunch rounded out the top-25 finishers placing 25th overall and coming in third for UNI with a time of 25:27.20. Terry Nielsen finished a second after Bunch, crossing the finish line in 26th place with a time of 25:28.50.
“We are really proud of the men today,” head coach Dan Steele said. “They fought every step of the way and refused to give even on place away.”
For the women, Alex Wilson finished first for UNI, placing 25th overall with a strong time of 18:30.40. Hayley Thomas came in second for the Panthers, finishing with a time of 19:02.40.
Kelsey Kirchoff notched a time of 19:13.00, coming in third for the UNI women’s team. Callie Matthews rounded out the top-four finishers for the Panthers, grabbing a time of 19:19.90.
“The women had a tough day, which is unfortunate because this is a really terrific group of young women,” Steele said. “The culture is coming together though, and this group of athletes has many bright days ahead.”
