ATHENS, Ohio - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team dropped its season opener to the Ohio Bobcats, 75-64.

The Bobcats took advantage of 11-of-23 shooting from three-point land in the contest. Contrastly, UNI made 6-of-22 from long-range on Saturday.

UNI trailed 23-13 midway through the first half before a Panther spurt cut the margin to 25-24 in favor of the Bobcats. The Panthers trailed 39-32 at the intermission.

UNI cut the Ohio lead to 67-63 following a Deon Mitchell bucket with 3:26 left in the second half. But the Bobcats were able to hold off the Panthers and scored the 11-point victory.

Mitchell led the Panthers with 18 points. Chip Rank contributed with 14 points. Jeremy Morgan tallied 13 points in his Panther debut. Wes Washpun had a balanced stat sheet with six points, six rebounds and five assists. Seth Tuttle led the Panthers in rebounding with eight caroms.

NOTES: UNI fell to 6-2 in season opening games under eighth-year head coach Ben Jacobson ... the only other previous loss in a season-opener came at Syracuse in the 2010-11 opener ... UNI won the rebounding battle, 34-27 ... UNI will open the home season on Monday in the McLeod Center with a 7 p.m. tip vs. Coe College.
