WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis squad scored a 4-3 victory over the visiting Southeast Missouri State RedHawks at the Black Hawk Tennis Club on Friday evening.

UNI head coach Daniel Finn picked up his first coaching victory with the Panthers in the triumph.

"The effort the girls gave today was great," Finn said. "We stayed very disciplined on the things we practiced this week and in our game plans and it showed in doubles. We were a bit shaky in singles but the girls were able to secure the win. For Sydney to battle her way back to win her match after losing the second set like she did shows a lot about her mental toughness as a player. Many players would have folded in that situation but she handled it like a champ. At the end of the day - a win is a win and for a team full of freshmen, it's a major confidence boost."

UNI tallied victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to capture the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of Erica Medlin and Jieke Stroobant posted a 6-3 win over Heather Robinson and Valeriia Kashina. The No. 2 pairing of Elvira Lopez and Astrid Santos notched a 6-3 win over SEMO's Melissa Martin and Ekaterina Donetskova. A new experimental rule didn't allow the No. 3 doubles match to finish - a match in which UNI's Krissy Lankelma and Sydney Wolfe led 5-2.

The clinching match came at No. 6 singles where UNI's Wolfe recorded a 10-6 third-set tiebreaker win over SEMO's Martin. Wolfe won the first set 6-2, but then dropped the second set, 6-0.

UNI's Elvira Lopez and Astrid Santos scored singles' wins for the Panthers as well.

UNI will be back in action on Saturday when the Panthers travel to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. The match will begin at 5 p.m.
