Edwardsville, Il. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team picked up a 6-1 victory over the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars this afternoon.
A dominant pitching performance from Jamie Fisher paired with timely hitting from the Panther offense helped UNI improve to a 14-6 mark on the season.
Kristin Lock put the UNI on the board early in the second inning. Lock worked the count to reach base on balls before Micalla Rettinger doubled to centerfield advancing Lock for the 1-0 lead.
The Panthers extended that lead to 4-0 after scoring in back-to-back innings starting in the 4th. Lock got things started once again after putting herself in scoring position with a double to centerfield. Micalla Rettinger, Nicole Fisher and Julia Hunter each drew walks to send Lock in for the score. Caitlin Wnek would cap the scoring in the 2nd with a sacrifice fly-out which allowed Rettinger to advance home and give UNI a 3-0 advantage.
Rikki Alcaraz plated a run in the 4th inning off of a Macey Wolfe RBI infield single lifting the Panthers to the 4-0 lead. Alcaraz paced the UNI offense throughout the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.
The Panthers wrapped up the scoring in the 7th with a pair of runs. Alcaraz reached base on a single to right-field before Alyssa Buchanan homered to go up on the Cougars, 6-1.
Jamie Fisher started the game and picked up her 8th win in the season. Fisher tossed a complete 7 innings where she faced 27 batters and allowed just 1 run off of 6 hits and fanned 6 Cougars in the process.
