Cedar Falls, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team picked up a 9-0 win over the Iowa State University Cyclones this afternoon at Robinson-Dresser Field.
Timely hitting paired with a remarkable pitching performance from Jamie Fisher led UNI (18-9 overall, 5-3 MVC) to a shutout of the Cyclones (17-15, 0-3 Big 12).
Rikki Alcaraz was the first to score for the Panthers after connecting for a solo-shot to left-center in the second inning to give UNI a 1-0 lead. Samantha Olson kept things going in the second with a single to left field. Olson picked up her team-leading 10th stolen base. Caitlin Wnek tallied her second homer on the season later in the inning lifting the Panthers to a 3-0 advantage.
Olson plated an addition run in the fifth inning before the bats erupted in the sixth. UNI tallied five runs on five hits, which featured Julia Hunter’s fifth homer of the season, and a double from Gina Brown, who extended her on-base streak to 15 games. The Panthers were led at the plate by Olson who went 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and scored a trio of runs.
Jamie Fisher picked up her 11th win on the season after tossing a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts and no walks.
The Panthers will take the field again this weekend in a three-game series with the Indiana State University Sycamores in Terre Haute, Ind. UNI will play a pair of games on Saturday and a single game on Sunday with the first pitch slated for Noon on both days.
