UNI T&F Set To Split Weekend In Illinois And California

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field team will split up this weekend, competing in both the Big Blue Classic in Charleston, Ill. and the 2014 Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Paige Knodle and Ben Lindaman will compete in Santa Barbara this weekend as part of one of the most prestigious multi-event meets in the country. The meet will consist of three sections for both the decathlon and the heptathlon, featuring collegiate and professional athletes together.

The Big Blue Classic is hosted by Eastern Illinois University and will include 15 different teams. Out of the 15 teams, five are Missouri Valley Conference teams, including Bradley, Illinois State, Indiana State and Southern Illinois.   

The Panthers are coming off their outdoor season opening weekend at the Emporia State University Spring Invitational on March 29. The meet was highlighted with UNI picking up several individual wins.

Alex Wilson opener her outdoor season with a win in the 1,500 meters and the 800 meters at the Spring Invitational. She posed a time of 4:32.40 for first place in the 1,500 meters, followed by a time of 2:14.15 in the 800.

The Panthers had several standout performances in the hammer throw, shot put and discus at the ESU Spring Invite. Chloe Schmidt and Matt Schiffer both placed first in their respective discus competitions. Schmidt won the discus with a new PR throw of 146-02.5 while Schiffer also notched a personal-best with a toss of 173-2.50.

Adam McDonnell grabbed a top-five finish in the hammer throw, placing fourth while Jamie Lindstrom grabbed a personal record in the hammer with a distance of 159-6.75. Lindstrom also picked up a second place finish in the women’s shot put with a throw of 46-0.50.

To close out the meet in Emporia, Kan., the women’s 4X400 meter relay team won the race. The team of Maddie Beeler, Alisha Jones, Emily McCarthy and Darian Samuelson won the event with a time of 3:51.93.

Lindaman and Knodle will both be competing in a multi-event since the MVC Indoor Championships. Knodle competed in the 60 meter hurdles and the javelin throw, qualifying for the finals in the hurdles and placing third overall in the javelin.

The Big Blue Classic will start on Friday, April 4 at 2 p.m. with the hammer throw, followed by running events starting at 6 p.m. with the 400 meter hurdles. The Sam Adams Invitational also kicks-off on Friday at 1 p.m. with Section A of the Decathlon.
