EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Evansville Purple Aces on Sunday at Wesselman Park.
UNI (9-10 overall, 0-3 MVC) scored its two wins in singles from Elvira Lopez and Astrid Santos. Lopez scored a three-set win over UE's Marina Moreno, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Santos also tallied a three-set victory over UE's Kelsey Costales, 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-2), at No. 4 singles.
Evansville (6-10 overall, 1-2 MVC) notched wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure the first point of the dual.
UNI's Krissy Lankelma registered her 81st career doubles victory when she and Jordyn Kearney posted an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Evansville's Mina Milovic and Andjela Brguljan. Lankelma needs two more doubles victories to tie the school record for career wins with Phoebe Walker (83 from 2009-13).
"Inconsistency would be the word of the day for us against Evansville," UNI head coach Daniel Finn said. "We have to do a better job of playing smarter tennis. Still you have to give full credit to Evansville because they refused to beat themselves today. We are getting closer and learning how to play through each other. While the score didn't reflect it, we got better today and if we are able to make a few adjustments this thing can get going. With a team as young asa we have, you still have to count the small victories first. We are almost there. We get to play another good match this afternoon, so there is no time to feel sorry - just get back on the court and compete."
UNI will take on Southern Indiana today at 3 p.m. in Evansville.
