NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State University scored a 4-0 win over the University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Friday.
The Redbirds (10-9 overall) gained the momentum early in the matchup by taking the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Illinois State won its first three singles matches (No. 1, No. 3, No. 6) to secure the necessary points to clinch the victory.
"We actually got out to a decent start in battling the wind," UNI head coach Daniel Finn said. "Illinois State made some good adjustments and we weren't able to adjust from there. Illinois State played a great match today and handled the elements better than we did."
UNI senior Krissy Lankelma was leading her match at No. 5 singles vs. Madeliene Baillon, 6-3, 5-5, when it was stopped.
UNI completed its first season under head coach Daniel Finn with an overall mark of 12-12 overall. UNI finished fourth in the MVC standings with a 2-4 league mark.
"The one positive is the youth of our team," Finn said. "We have so many young players and they will be back next - another year of being court mature. We just have to put in the work in the offseason and come back stronger. This has been a long season and the team has been through a lot. You have to give them credit for coming together as a team and competing in the fashion they did. We have definitely gotten better and we will continue to get better as next year comes around."
