ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The University of Alabama Crimson Tide scored a 3-1 victory over the University of Northern Iowa Panther volleyball team on Friday at the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic in the season opener for both squads.
Alabama won set one, 25-19, before UNI knotted the match at 1-1 with a 28-26 triumph in set two. The Crimson tied won sets three and four by the count of 26-24 and 25-21.
Junior Kinsey Caldwell and senior Eryca Hingtgen each netted a double-double with Caldwell contributing 40 assists and 10 digs, while Hingtgen secured 13 kills and 15 digs. Hingtgen's 13 kills tied for team-high honors with sophomores Leigh Pudwill and Kayla Haneline. Sophomore Amie Held was credited with a team-high 16 digs.
It marked only the fourth season-opening loss in 15 tries for UNI head coach Bobbi Petersen. Petersen is now 11-4 in season openers.
UNI will take on Saint Louis tonight at 7 p.m.
