WICHITA, Kan. - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team dropped its final regular season game 75-53 to Wichita State at Charles Koch Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Rachel Madrigal, K.K. Armstrong and Brittni Donaldson each scored nine points to lead UNI. Wichita State was led by 14 points from freshman Alex Harden.
Shooting once again played a factor in the Panthers' defeat, as UNI shot 29.3 percent for the game compared to Wichita State's 49.2-percent effort.
Sophomore Jess McDowell matched her career high with eight rebounds and Madrigal added seven boards. Freshman guard Sharnae Lamar posted a career-best seven points.
Wichita State (18-11, 12-6 MVC) ran out to an 8-0 lead in just over two minutes and held a 15-5 lead with 14:50 left in the first half. The Shockers pushed their lead to 14 points at 31-17 with five minutes left in the half, but UNI answered with a 7-0 run and ended the half only down nine at 38-29.
Down 42-34 after an Oney layup, UNI saw Wichita State go on a 22-4 run over the next nine minutes to lead 64-38 with eight minutes remaining.
The Shockers outscored UNI 42-18 in the paint.
Armstrong moved into 10th place on the UNI all-time scoring list at 1,186 career points. Madrigal chalked up four more blocks to get to 36 blocks for the MVC season.
With the Panthers' regular season concluded, the State Farm MVC Women's Basketball Tournament will run from Mar. 8-11 in St. Charles, Mo. UNI will be the No. 5 seed and meet No. 4 seed Creighton in the quarterfinals on Fri., Mar. 9, at 2:35 p.m.
