Following a record-breaking performance at the Central College Invitational over the weekend, University of Northern Iowa senior thrower Justin Romero has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week.
Romero destroyed the 34-year-old UNI school record in the shot put on Saturday, winning the meet title. Romero threw 60-01 (18.31m) to break the previous school record by 1 foot, 7 inches. Romero now leads the Missouri Valley Conference and is ranked No. 10 in the nation in the shot put this season. No MVC athlete has thrown further in the last five years.
Another UNI school record also fell on Saturday, as UNI senior hurdler Olimpia Nowak clocked a time of 13.66 seconds to win the 100m hurdles. Nowak's time was previously believed to be the second-fastest in school history, but the prior mark of 13.64 seconds set by Kara Yahn in 2007 was achieved with an illegal wind, deeming that record wind-aided.
Nowak owns the No. 16 time in the West Region in the 100m hurdles this season and leads the MVC.
Tuesday also saw the UNI men's track & field team debut at No. 12 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest regional rankings.
