MILWAUKEE, Wis.- The No. 25 University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball team swept the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 25-16, 25-18, 25-16, in their first game of the Ambassador Hotel Golden Eagle Classic Saturday morning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Amy Braun led the Panthers with 12 kills and Megan Lehman and Krista DeGeest followed with 11 kills each. Molly Turk recorded 35 assists for UNI and Candice Burke tallied 17 digs.
The Panthers were down 8-5 in the first set when a kill from Shelby Kintzel made the score 8-6. Wake Forest answered with a kill in the next play though to go back up by three at 9-6. Three straight kills by Braun tied the set up at 9-9 and the Panthers took advantage of an attack error in the next play to take the lead at 10-9. The Demon Deacons tied it up in the next play with a kill from Anna Carley at 10-10 but Braun came through again with a kill in the next play to make it 11-10. The Panthers took off from their and Wake Forest could not answer the Panther's run. UNI won the set 25-16.
UNI jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second set. Wake Forest brought the score to within two points at 6-4, but this was as close as they would come. The Panthers cruised through this set and won it 25-18.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the third set, Andrea Beck of Wake Forest got the kill to make it 5-4. DeGeest got the kill in the next play to tie it up at 5-5. UNI then went on a 5-0 run to make it 11-5 at a Wake Forest timeout. The Panthers continued to dominate the set and defeated Wake Forest 25-19 to win the match 3-0.
The Panthers will return to the court tonight when they take on No. 23 Michigan at 5:00 p.m. in their second game of the Ambassador Hotel Golden Eagle Classic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
