PHILADELPHIA - David Bonin and Ryan Loder both remain alive at the 2011 Division I Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. Both Bonin and Loder finished the day 1-1 and remain alive in the consolation round for their respective weight classes.

 

Bonin and Loder will take to the mat Friday morning at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

 

Second Round - Thursday Night

In the second round, David Bonin fell victim to Penn State's No. 3 seeded David Taylor. Taylor picked up a technical fall over Bonin. Bonin will now take on Northern Illinois' Bryan Deutsch in the wrestlebacks. Bonin and Deutsch met earlier this season with Bonin picking up a 14-4 major decision.

 

No. 6 seeded Ryan Loder suffered his first loss of the NCAA Championships, falling 12-10 to Duke's Diego Bencomo. Loder will face Oregon State's Brice Arand in the wrestlebacks.

 

Wrestle-backs - Thursday Night

Brantley suffered his second loss of the day to Oregon State's Clayton Jack, eliminating him from the tournament. Brantley finishes the season with 25-8 record.

 

Preliminary Round - Thursday Morning

Bonin advanced with a 5-4 win over Binghamton's Matt Kaylor at 157 pounds. Kaylor took an 4-1 lead early in the first period, but Bonin escaped and secured a takedown of his own to knot the score at 4-4 heading into the second period. After starting down to start the second period, Bonin picked up an escape to go up 5-4. Neither wrestler scored in the third period, giving Bonin the 5-4 decision.

 

No. 6 seeded Loder had to go into a tiebreaker to earn his 4-2 win over Hofstra's Ben Clymer. Clymer scored first, picking up an escape in the second period. Loder knotted the score at 1-1 in the third period after an escape of his own. In the tiebreaker, Clymer scored an escape, but Loder countered with a takedown to take the 3-2 lead. After starting down, Loder picked up another escape and held of Clymer to finish with the 4-2 win.

 

At the heavyweight slot, Brantley suffered a 3-1 setback to Minnesota's No. 8 seeded Anthony Nelson. After a scoreless first period, Brantley scored an escape to put the first points on the board. Nelson countered with an escape of his own in the third period to knot the score at 1-1. In overtime, Nelson scored the only takedown of the match to pick up the 3-1 win.

 

The Panthers will return to action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CST.
