The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team (2-9-2, 0-2-0 MVC) travels to Normal, Ill., Friday for a Missouri Valley Conference match against preseason conference favorite Illinois State. The Panthers will return home for a Sunday afternoon match with North Dakota to wrap up their non-conference slate. One more win for UNI will surpass the team's 2009 win total.

Scouting the Opposition

Illinois State (5-5-0, 1-0-0 MVC) was labeled as the conference favorite in the preseason MVC poll and started the season with a 4-2 mark before going 1-3 in its last four matches. The Redbirds opened MVC play with a 2-0 road victory over Drake on Oct. 3. Sophomore goalkeeper Mara Kremenovic has played every minute of the season in goal, posting a goals against average mark of 1.30. Junior Jessica Carlson has scored three of the team's eight goals.

North Dakota (0-9-0) has been outscored by a 21-6 margin on the season and 14-4 in the second half of contests. Six different players have scored single goals for the Fighting Sioux. Senior goalkeeper Monica Stierman has played all nine games in goal, posting a goals against average mark of 2.29.

Twice as Nice

Senior forward Nicole Ferlito notched two goals for UNI against Creighton on Oct. 2, giving the Panthers their first individual two-goal performance since Sept. 4, 2009. Ferlito gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute and added a penalty kick goal in the 71st minute. She is now tied for the team lead in goals with three.

Second Shutout

Freshman goalkeeper Erin Zaideman recorded her second double-overtime shutout of the season on Oct. 3 as UNI tied South Dakota, 0-0. The freshman goalkeeper registered six saves in the contest. Zaideman's first shutout came on Sept. 17 at South Dakota State, when she recorded 11 saves to give the Panthers their first draw of the season.

Senior Leaders

Senior forwards Chelsie Hochstedler and Nicole Ferlito have both netted three goals this season to lead the Panthers. Hochstedler and Ferlito have tallied 22 and nine goals, respectively, in their careers at UNI.

MVC Holds Strong

The Missouri Valley Conference turned in another solid non-conference slate last week, going 2-1-1 to move its season non-league mark to 33-29-10.  The plus-.500 non-league mark is news since the Valley has had only two winning non-conference marks since sponsorship of women's soccer began in 1996 (2001 and 2005).  Only eight non-conference regular-season matches remain.
