ST. LOUIS - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team features four players that earned Missouri Valley Conference honors for their play during the conference slate the league announced Thursday night.
Junior midfielder Melissa Hagan and sophomore defender Sam Copley each earned Second Team All-MVC honors while senior defender Missy Journot earned Honorable Mention All-MVC. Freshman Caitlyn Fuller was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team.
Melissa Hagan (Second Team All-MVC) has played in all 20 games for the Panthers this season and ranks second on the team with eight points. Hagan is tied for second on the team in shots, 25, and first on the team in shots on goal, 14. Hagan has tallied three goals and two assists on the season. Hagan is tied for first on the team with two game-winning goals.
"Mel (Melissa) has had a really good year. She is able to go past players 1 vs. 1 and added creativity to our team and that makes her a great threat for us." said UNI head coach James Price.
Sam Copley (Second Team All-MVC) has recorded four shots on the season and is a key member of a UNI defense that has posted seven shutouts and limited opponents to a .082 shot percentage. Copley also helped UNI hold the advantage in corner kicks throughout the season, posting an advantage of 96-76 heading in to the semifinal match up with Missouri State.
"Sam has been consistent all season long starting in every game and built off of her freshman year and continued to play well." said Price.
Missy Journot was named to the Honorable Mention All-MVC team. Journot is a vital piece of the Panther defense that posted seven shutouts on the season. Journot has played in 19 games this season, tallying two goals and three assists. Her seven points put her in a tie for third on the team. Journot has put 11 of her 15 shots on goal this season for a shot on goal percentage of .733. Journot made the fifth and final penalty kick in overtime to clinch just the second MVC quarterfinal win for the Panthers in their 12 year history. Journot has handled a majority of the corner kicks and free kicks for UNI this season.
"Missy has been very strong defensively all season and has provided us with great service from corners and free kicks which allows us to be dangerous from some of our set pieces." Said Price.
Caitlyn Fuller was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team. Fuller has played in all 20 games this season, firing 17 shots. She has two assists on the season to go along with six shots on goal.
"Caitlyn brings such a good energy to our team. As a freshman she's been very consistent with that. It is somewhat rare, freshman usually have dips in the season but Fuller has been very consistent with her energy throughout the season." Said Price.
