The University of Northern Iowa women’s softball team headed to Ames, Iowa Tuesday afternoon for a matchup with the Cyclones of Iowa State. UNI (20-9) (6-0) coming off of a six game winning streak sent senior pitcher Jaye Hutcheson to the circle in hopes of picking up her eighth win on the season. Hutcheson came out firing in the first inning retiring the side quickly through her first three batters and never seemed to let up.
After a slow start left UNI scoreless in the first inning at the plate the Panthers came out swinging with plenty of fire power in the second. Senior Allison Galvin got the bats going with a double to left field. Following back to back home runs from Whitney Plein and Melissa Walls the Panthers were off to a quick 3-0 lead. The momentum never seemed to slow down as the hits kept coming. Mackenzie Daigh led the team with three hits on the day in her four plate appearances which Gina Brown and Whitney Plein set the pace for runners brought in each with a pair.
Jaye continued to control the rubber and kept the defense going through her full five innings pitched. Jaye faced eighteen batters where she allowed just two hits, struck out four batters, and zero runs as she kept the Cyclones off the board completely in the process of earning her eighth win of the season.
As the Panthers rolled on to their 8-0 victory they’ve managed to keep their now eight game winning streak alive while Pitcher Jaye Hutcheson has allowed just her third hit in her last two starts in the circle. Gina Brown picked up her fifth home run against the Cyclones which leads the Panthers while Whitney Plein is close behind with four. The Panthers will return to the diamond this weekend taking on the Shockers of Wichita State in a three game conference series and hope to remain undefeated in the Missouri Valley Conference.
