The University of Northern Iowa women’s softball team headed to Macomb, Ill., this afternoon for a pair of games against the Leathernecks of Western Illinois. Coming off of a weekend trip that resulted in a three game conference sweep in Wichita, Kansas, the Panthers were looking to improve on their 11-game win streak. This streak has not been reached since the 1989 season.
The Panthers got the bats firing in the third. Senior Laura Turner got the offense started with a single to the left side. After Hannah Borschel was hit by a pitch the pair of runners scored on a Gina Brown double.
As the defense held the Panthers carried their momentum at the plate over to the fourth inning where they came out swinging getting four runs across from seniors Mackenzie Daigh, Laura Turner, Hannah Borschel and Gina Brown. The Panthers collected a 6-0 advantage as they entered the bottom of the fourth. With plenty of cushion the Panthers wrapped up the scoring in the 5th inning as Mackenzie Daigh and Whitney Plein scored to put the Panthers up 8-0.
The Panthers sent senior Jaye Hutcheson to the circle as the starting pitcher. She wasted little time early allowing just a hit in her first two innings and kept the Leathernecks off the board. She tossed a five-hit shutout with two strikeouts for her 10th win of the season.
With the win the Panthers earned their 12th striaght victory, the longest streak for the Panther program at the Division I level. UNI won 18 in a row in 1977 as a member of the AIAW.
Game two of the UNI-WIU doubleheader was cancelled due to lightning and will not be made up.
UNI will take the diamond again Friday afternoon against the Drake Bulldogs in Missori Valley Conference action in Cedar Falls, Iowa, at Robinson Dresser Field.
