The University of Northern Iowa women’s softball team headed south this afternoon to face the No. 9-ranked Missouri Tigers.
UNI rode into the contest against the Big 12's Tigers in the midst of a 15 game win streak. However the Tigers were able to snap the Panthers' string of victories with a 3-1 decision in Columbia, Mo. Missouri improved to 31-6 on the season.
UNI sent senior Jaye Hutcheson to the circle in hopes of picking up her 12th win on the season. Hutcheson walked her first batter but settled in quickly retiring the Tigers in order to end the inning.
Hutcheson tossed 3.2 innings allowing three hits and all three runs in the matchup. Jamie Fisher relieved Hutcheson in the fourth inning and struck out four batters in 2.1 innings of work. Fisher did not allow a hit as a reliever on Wednesday.
Despite a solo home run in first inning from senior Laura Turner the Panthers were allowed few opportunities at scoring. The Panthers were held to just four hits coming from Turner’s home run, a Mackenzie Daigh single in the sixth, and a pair of singles from Whitney Plein in the fifth and seventh innings.
With the loss the Panthers fall to 28-10 on the season while they still sit atop the Missouri Valley Conference with a 12-0 conference record.
UNI will take the field again Saturday afternoon in Omaha, Nebraska when they face a three-game conference series with Creighton University.
