MURFREESBORO, Tennessee- The University of Northern Iowa women's team defeated the University of Tennessee-Martin 6-1 this afternoon in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The Panthers took control early on in doubles play. The UNI team of Cassandra Dix and Krissy Lankelma defeated Jodie Tiley and Ivon Simic of UTM 8-3 in the No. 1 match. It was a close match for Jessica Kunzelmann and Nina Pfahler in the No. 2 match, but they pulled off the 8-7 win against Alice Laing and Johanie Van Zyl of UTM. Stefannia Sampaio and Chelsea Moore won their No. 3 match, defeating Anna Marie Herbold and Katie McCall of UTM 8-2.

In singles play, Pfahler fell to Tiley of UTM 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 match. Dix breezed past Simic of UTM 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. Kunzelmann got the win in her No. 3 match against Herbold of UTM 7-6, 6-3. Kunzelmann is now only one win from the top of the all-time career singles win list. In the No. 4 match, Moore defeated Laing of UTM 6-2, 6-0. Lankelma got the win in her No. 5 match, defeating Jessica Silva of UTM 6-0, 7-6. Sampaio breezed past McCall of UTM 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 match.

"We played well for our first match outside the Midwest," said Head Coach Sachin Kirtane. "We got a solid win, and now we need to come out strong against Murray State tomorrow."

The Panthers will be playing Murray State tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
